Been trying to spread my wings in the electronic stuff since my knowledge is very minimal in that area. Apple music led me to this and I absolutely love it

well one thing that set squarepusher apart was that he plays actual bass guitar here
and on music is rotted one note he plays drums too

That's dope. I'll give Rotted One Note a spin next. Got any recs for what you'd consider classic within the electronic stuff? Seems like you've got a pretty good grasp on the style

terry riley - rainbow in curved air
tangerine dream - alpha centauri, phaedra (those two as starting points, everything they did in the 70s otherwise)
klaus schulze - cyborg, moondawn (ditto)
kraftwerk - autobahn, the man machine (ditto)
jean michel jarre - oxygene
vangelis can be a tricky one depending on how electronic you want your electronic music to be and where you draw the line between that and ambient, obviously theres the blade runner soundtrack that everyone and their mum jacks off to but you can try Mask maybe
squarepusher's debut is generally less crazy and more atmospheric compared to this one, used to have it 5d so big recommend
u-ziq - tango n vectif
aphex twin - saw85-92 which despite its name is not really ambient, more like ambient house and ambient techno, which is to say its lush and all but there are still clear beats and they are cool. still have this 5d so yea. also the rest of his discog too
autechre - incunabula, garbage . some of the most accessible of their works and prob the closest sonically to the previous two producers
the orb - adventures
orbital - orbital 2 (as a starting point, first 4 are all mint)
underworld - dubnobass (read my review)
ltj bukem - logical progression (aka logical progression level 1) technically a dj set but it pretty much shows the peak of what atmo dnb was all about
porter ricks - biokinetics
leftfield - leftism
drexciya - neptune's lair or really almost anything they did
a guy called gerald - black secret technology
hybrid - wide angle
BT - ima
starting to get tired so i'll stop here even tho im sure i will be pissed i missed something obvious next time i wander into this thread

Cheers for that! I've only heard incunabula and phaedra from those and I think they're probably my favorite discoveries so far. Will definitely check the lists too

A better Aphex Twin (cry about it)
Yet again I get skeptical of listening to anything "electronic" made in the late 90's, so of course I fully expected some bad dance music. What I got was (and I will not apologize for saying this) a better Aphex Twin. I think comparing this album to Aphex Twin is fair. When I listened to Selected Ambient Works 85-92, I was mostly bored (I gave that album a 7) and not impressed at all considering his reputation as Aphex Twin. This album however was vastly more entertaining and interesting to listen to. I suppose it does have that faint 90's smell to it, but I'd consider this much deeper than your average electronics album from the time.
