I realised two hours ago how faraking awesome this CD is! I used to be like, yeah Tool are O.K, Hooker with a poinis is awesome. Now that I've read the lyrics, oh god they're not as good as Soundgarden but holy crap!

Best songs; Aenema, Hooker and Stinkfist.

Great album
Fav songs: Pu****, H, Stinkfist, Third Eye
The little "filler" songs kinda get in the way of the better, longer tracks but they still add nicely to the mood and flow of the album.

Pushit is an amazing song. The last half of it is probably my favourite moment on Aenima. The amount of emotion in Maynard's voice while singing the "remember I will always love you..." part is simply great.

ParaRiddleDiddle, you're review was very straight-up and overall excellent.

OpiateTheMasses!, one of the greatest reviews here of any album.

Ænima is truly one of the greatest records of all time, by the best band ever. For those few people who have been living under a rock for the past 9 years (crap... this came out THAT long ago!), approach it as a piece of art, not a piece of music, and you'll have fun.

I have a lot of "favorite" albums. But as you can see from my avatar, this one's gotta be my favorite. There is just GREAT song after GREAT song. Everything on there is GREAT except for Jimmy and Push!t, IMO. And even those songs are very good quality.

IDK what the hell that guy was talking about when he said that Intermission was his favorite song, though. His reasoning sounds a bit pretentious, IMO.

Also, Third Eye is THE best Tool song there is. My favorite song EVER. Adam Jones shows his brilliant writing skills and ability to create atmosphere. I don't care about his technical ability, he gets the job done.

I believe that while the reviews were on the mark - looking at the passionate riffs that exude so many unspoken words; the excellent drumming (hamburgertrain mentions); what the fills meant to you, like them or not; how overall it was received very well from a musical genre point - There is much that has been missed and it is this that is the most important thing about the album and about Tool as a band…

Forgive me for explaining; but, it seems that a lot of you are seeing the album from only one side, while Tool are making music, the reason they are doing it is to pass a message - excuse the cliché - Maynard James Keenan's lyrics are what holds the album together and gives it its force. He is coming from a place far beyond anger or pain; the music contains and restricts the emotion he is trying to get to you. The revulsion and resentment mixed into the lyrics that taunt and challenge faith are only softened by the instruments…

MJK abhors us, and everything that we stand for and about, this is no reason for us not to like his music; but, it does say something about how it was intended to be received. What makes Tool so good is the genuine emotion being pushed into you... As you rock your head and embrace it, just like we all have... He's proving how easily you can be convinced with hatred and anger... You enjoy this hatred and destruction. This easy catch - us getting into the songs - is just meant to mirror how he sees us. We are being told that we are weak and that we have been deluded by whatever it is we individually; or via the masses believe in. We are inferior and easily lead... All of us. You should really be shocked by what Tool stand for and how they feel when they make their music... We are being used…

This reason is what makes anything Tool do as a band formidable and it should be honoured in silence. Reviewing their albums should be embarrassing because we aren’t meant to understand. As seen in the vast majority who don’t understand the segues - Stop looking at them as pieces of music, there is something more urgent about what is going on…

If it seems I have contradicted myself, you are mistaken, I comment on your comments, not Aenima. Listen to the band, all of it, in one sitting… Really listen to it... It wants to consume you and devastate everything that you have ever believed to be true be it about goodness, family, faith or freedom, it wants to bring everything and anything constructive to its knees.

This I believe is a little more pressing than how it sounds and if a review is to be offered then this should be included because they are not just about the music... There is nothing gained by saying that Tool are a great rock band and by saying it we are stripping them of some of their greatness

We cant achieve anything by saying that a Tool track was a great rock song… Because that takes away some of its greatness.

to tin heart:

but then again, who cares?

so what if they want to make us tools? If rocking out to kick ass music makes me a tool, then so be it. I'll tool myself all night.

btw, this album is absolutely amazing and i just had to comment, even if the thread is really old.
