Enslaved never had that special 'one' LP during the 2nd wave. Vikingligr Veldi and Frost come close, but miss that status by a hair's breadth. They made up for it with consistency, but I couldn't name an Enslaved song with the same classic status like Shadow of the Horns/Ea/Unsilent Storms etc.

Maybe not in popularity but in quality VV is totally up there with the classics of emperor, burzum, darkthrone and immortal.

I would go as far as arguing that VV retains one of the broadest visions of any black metal release, perhaps second only to hvis lyset tar oss. Few other releases feel so complete as an album, with each song being great in its own right while still contributing to the larger picture painted by the whole album.

I'm not even the biggest black metal fan but this is so scrumptious for a bunch of teenagers.

horrific take but to each his own

would say that this is crazy overlooked as far as enslaved goes tho. I actually found it on the Emperor split in the last few years and like it a lot more than their other stuff

definitely take this over any overrated entry levle burzum/gorgoroth shit that attracts all the wannabes

band's had a unique trajectory though

first few enslaved are different from turn of the millennium enslaved, different from the opeth-inspired era, different from the 2010s prog cocking

turn of millennium enslaved overrated af, rather blut aus nord 1000%

this is probably on par with all burzum EXCEPT filo. and it also works like ODDLY well as a companion to the emperor s/t or maybe im just high

I've always loved their work since Below the Lights. Never listened to their classic pure bm until tonight. Really vibing to Vikingligr Veldi rn.

I find most pure black metal... idk tuneless. I can't make out the details. I don't have that problem with early Enslaved.
