I've found that Pitchfork's favorable reviews are good, but their negative ones are bad. They just stretch to find everything they can to make an album bad and exaggerate small details. I guess it's because they want to spread their reviews evenly across the scale, but their negative reviews usually seem forced.

Wow, I'm surprised that so many people like Teqkilla...that's easily my least favorite song on the album. Singing about getting drunk is a little cliche hip-hop, honestly. Next thing she'll be doing an "in da club." The "down the drain" crap is annoying, and I hate that her voice is so buried in the mix because of all of that reverb. The chorus is catchy I guess, but otherwise it's a major meh-fest.
XXXO is a good pop song, although I feel like it's a little too mainstream. The thing that I always liked about MIA was how quirky and unusual yet catchy she was, and I feel like that song could easily have been a Nelly Furtado track (not to say anything negative about Furtado...her last album was pretty sweet, it's just not MIA). Steppin Up has grown on me a bit, but it's still not fantastic. Love a lot is great (I especially love the way she toys with people who think she's some sort of terrorist with the "Love a lot/love allah" wordplay), and "It Takes a Muscle" is surprisingly refreshing. "Born Free" is a lot of fun. idk it's an ok album, but it doesn't hold a candle to Kala or Arular IMO.

It's interesting Det, because the criticism of this wavers in between 'too pop' and 'too abrasive' or 'not sure whats going on!'. I like it so much because I think she nailed that balance between pop and caustic just right.

is she still really good at singing out of key

My criticism is that it's boring and pointless.

I wouldn't say it's pointless Bitchfork. I'm leaning more towards phoney. Although I should only judge this album on its musical merrits (of which there are very few), I can't shake the feeling that MIA is full of shit.

It literally goes nowhere. Stagnant the whole way through, and it's not interesting on its own to do that. When she's Merzbow, she can release a 40 min. album of the same stuff.

one of the best reviews i read in a long time.
Album is incredibly messy and I love it. Though quite surprised pitchfork trashed the album.

Streetlight: well, I think it's because she hits both extremes depending on the track. It's like some tracks are supposed to compensate for others, or she wanted to make a really messy album but pressures forced her to make a few radio-friendly tunes.
GNG she's usually in key when she's singing or at least vocoded in key. The rest of the time she's rapping which isn't strictly tonal. What are you referring to?

This is a guilty pleasure, but I agree that about half of these songs are forgettable.
