Well-written review, btw, even if I disagree, and if it sounds kind of generic, in the sense that you're just regurgitating what the hive of BTBAM haters on here always say. In my opinion, anyway
I'm not sure who's in the hive, but I've been listening to the band for a decade so think my opinion came naturally, however it sounds. I think the same criticisms get thrown around because there are obvious flaws in every BtB album. The first two records are rough around the edges, but also fresh compared to the later stuff. Colors had awesome elements, but your view of that record is just opinion, like everyone else's. It's messy and self-indulgent, which isn't something that's apparent in their early work.

great review. I listened to this once on youtube. I don't really know how I feel about it.

I don't find Colors messy at all. One of the reasons I like it so much is because of how much is going on all the time, and yet how it still remains organized. Even if the songs go on some weird tangents sometimes, the underlying concepts of the songs are still there. You can't really deny that.
And are you saying it's "self-indulgent" because of how technical the riffs are, the long instrumental breaks/solos, etc.? Because just because there's some 10+ minute songs with a lot of musicianship-displays doesn't necessarily mean the musicians are being "self-indulgent." They have to play the music with that attitude. And I do not hear that attitude at all on Colors.
Also, I find The Silent Circus not NEARLY as tightened/organized as Colors. The thought of the opposite is completely foreign to me.

No I'm not saying it's self-indulgent because of the technicality, it's the way the songs are just crammed with riffs and ideas to the point that it damages the songs. Instead of developing a section they just tack on another. Some tracks in TSC and their debut had baggy sections, but each individual track felt like a song. Stuff like Ants of the Sky is like a story that endlessly says "and then this happened, then this, then this..." It's not a song, it's a group of guys pissing about in a studio and releasing what comes out, without any editing.

Well, I guess this where we just disagree. See, my thoughts on Ants of the Sky and songs like it are, the lyrics are telling a story, but they're just taking a bit longer to tell it than a typical/shorter song would. Not only because there's a lot of lyrics (all dealing with the same, underlying concept, I might add), but because they put some instrumental stuff in between. Which I think adds to the songs, rather than detracts, but that's where it gets really subjective.

It's all subjective. I just like a song to use it's running length to the full. Plenty of 30 min+ tracks are that long because the music demands it. BtBaM need to cut the filler and focus on their strengths.

I went through TSC the other night walking through midtown and it was everything I remembered it to be. They have fallen off the horse for good. This isn't the band I thought I liked and it hasn't been since the covers album.

^^^ btw this hits it spot on. I thought they would return back to form at some point and start making songs again. Like 4-5 cohesive pieces. No need to go back to the days of the shevanels, or camilla rhodes even, but how about all bodies? even backwards marathon will do! ants of the sky through prequel is an enormous feat to get through. who can enjoy that on their commute to work? I got a 20 minute ride into to the city, I don't have time for swim to the moon. That's like "hey, you guys want to have a sleep over and rock out swim to the moon?" material. it has to be an event. always an event...

Dude the cover of Bicycle Race should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity

it was just refreshing after TSC and Alaska... that's all. TSC was a borderline death metal album, and Alaska capitalized on every element of the band I loved. The covers album just showed their flexibility in every aspect. I'm not rocking out little 15 in my room right now, I just think it was cool. I even enjoyed colorblind and bought the dead and dreaming release before anatomy of came out just to rock that out. everything they did was gold until it started going10-15 min pieces that all sounded like noodling wankery for irish pots of gold and were extremely prog happy.
