I hadn't used my debit card for like a month because each time I tried I got a message saying "possibilite de retraits epuisees" (cba adding the accents, sorry..) so I figured OK fine, I've emptied the account, fair enough. Started using my regular British card instead. Last week I went to cash in a cheque I got from work and I was still getting the same problem despite the girl at the bank saying it'd be in the account in under 24 hours. Went on a wild goose chase yesterday (a lot of the branches are closed on mondays, classic France) only to find out that for each transaction on my debit card there are little charges because I only get so many transactions per week/month or whatever (and I never carry cash around because it's fiddly and I don't like to, I use card 95% of the time, regardless of how much the total is..), so due to these charges my account had went under €0, and each week they randomly tack on fees for being under, as well as one time random hits called commissions d'intervention or something, some being as expensive as €40. Even with the cheque going in, I'm still €50 in the red zone, so I can't withdraw and I've lost an indeterminable amount of money - probably at least €150.
