I think the songs sound a bit too scripted. Instead of sitting in a room and figuring out some stuff that sounds cool and goes well together, it seems they built their songs around mandatory gimmicks.. this song must have clapping and stomping... this song must have this beat pulsating at all times... I feel like there's a lot of cool ideas going on but not much cohesion and the music seems forced, not fluid.

That and they're also not really doing anything creative with their gimmicks, a lot of it is just really plain and never goes anywhere. Which in contrast to Night Visions, while not that impressive, it still sounded like the band had a general idea of how to make their music fun and gimmicky.
Here theyre just trying way too hard to be some "artistic" sounding pop rock band, but in the end they're trying way too hard because they've limited themselves (or their label has) to gimmicks that don't really blend well with their "ideal sound."

I don't think it's fake as much as the fact that Imagine Dragons most likely isn't a very talented band. They make fun music, but it's yet to be seen whether or not they can elevate themselves in terms of talent and innovation.
