I really like this one, this got me into The Mars Volta when Frances or Delaoused would only fail to do so. Still, the one I listen to the most from them. Excellent review, pos.

Have no idea how anyone could consider this a weak release.

Octahedron is the only low point in their discog.

There are some high points, Viscera Eyes comes to mind but this is when they went full on wank-fest. Love the first two albums & Bedlam is very good as well but very rarely want to hear this in it's entirety.

Octahedron is underrated to hell. But this is definitely my fave Volta record I think.... just.

So many bloody good moments on here that get overlooked; Day of the Baphomets ranks this as a 5 alone.

Try half their albums. TMV are inconsistent, which given their over-the-top progressive tendencies is to be expected really. Sometimes they hit, sometimes they miss. This is close to a miss but there are also admittedly great moments here. I wouldn't want to sit through the whole thing mind.

After listening to this again today (first time in years) I've come to the same overall conclusion but not necessarily the same opinion about specific tracks/parts. 'Asilos Magdalena' would be so good without all the unnecessary 'noiseyness' in the 2nd half, similarly I love 'Tetragrammaton' for a while but then it gets tiresome, 16 minutes is just too long. I think there's some missed opportunities here.

The jams are no more exaggerated than they are on Frances though. The only difference between this and FTM is there is an awesome vibe surrounding this one.

Legit, their last true classic imo.
