I'm not sure the hallucination-reality comparison maps onto art/music! I'm an idealist I suppose, but I have a sense that someone's perception of a piece of art is sort of sacred, so long as they're not making claims about reality rather than their interaction with the art. I sincerely don't feel like I can deflate someone's "for some reason Number 1 Angel reminds me of Karl Marx's 1848 Manuscripts" [assuming they are being sincere/honest] even if I'll rush to poke a hole in "Charli XCX has made an album about class struggle"

"intent" seems too dodgy for me--secondary rather than primary if we're counting it in at all. art escapes intent all the time, and intent is often so hard to figure out. wish I had a map of intentions for Beethoven's (certainly substantial!) string quartets...

my other point was probably ill-formed though so yeah i'll drop it

for some reason the case of like a bird creating a nest or [x animal] creating [y beautiful thing] comes to mind: the intent matters from our aesthetic perspective only insofar as it was the driving force behind the thing coming to look as it does, but no further. a bird may have thought "this will be a great house for me and my kids" but that doesn't matter to us as we view the thing. the beauty of it is what we're looking at

intent can help you figure out why something is the way it is, but I don't think it'll quite ever be the reason you like something

this is all total spitballin' though

I think we're at a sincere impasse here: I think beauty, or whatever word you want to use to describe that ineffable something that draws us to a work of art, is numero uno for sure in importance if we're talking about art, and far from a worthless abstraction of intent or substance. I almost think it's the other way around, as perverse as that might seem

I disagree that "intent" is a constant in a way that beauty is not, I think, too

But you're right that I don't want to get rid of the artist. I'll have to think about this...

I should probably go to bed though. good discus
