That's very true and didn't really think about that. I guess travelling that far is going to be very costly for Aussie bands and you'd have to be away from home etc for so long too. If you can made a good living in your own country that is obviously preferable.

Doesn't mean Kenny doesn't enjoy BoT, though going by the reviews of this maybe they're not for me now. Which is a shame as I dig their first three albums

This is very generic statement but in Australia, basically if you are a proper muso type person, you know, music is your life kind of thing you're more likely to be a Karnivool fan, but BOT appeal to people that come across them on commercial radio, so have the wider audience. People that look at websites like this more likely to be Karnivool fans. You know how it is. Karnivool are one of the biggest names on the "scene" here in Australia, but a lot of BOT fans don't follow said "scene" they have come across them in other ways. Most of the people who follow K'vool though would also to some degree follow BOT, but less favourably and this current album wouldn't be up their alley. I basically consider myself one of those, even though i listen to a lot of styles that most people of the 'scene' would possibly consider average.

Sounds about right. Do BOT songs show up in Aussie TV shows and commercials? That sort of licensing is usually where the real money is these days.

The real money is on OnlyFans.

I am jealous that anyone with tits can make money on onlyfans. That's a real hustle in these weird times

I can't speak for the rest of Aus/the world but Karnivool comfortably sell out moderate-large sized venues in their hometown (Perth) and have done for the last 10 years. From memory their last show sold out in like 3-4 hours and that was for like a sunday night or something. Birds of tokyo however would probably be a headliner for a family-friendly shire music festival and rarely play conventional music venues because they all sleep on beds made of money after licensing a song to telstra. No, there isn't really a point to this post. Thankyou.

As a massive Birds fan, it obviously wasn't their best, but i also didn't hate it...This one was made for Ian Kenny as a way to help overcome the pain from his breakup. I'm not gonna bother getting to deep into it. Will listen to it again a few times I'm sure before returning to their earlier stuff.

I'm aware this is not the best first impression for me, which is why I plan to discog run these guys ASAP. I'm sure theres a lot more to love outside of this.

Birds of Tokyo are way more popular in Australia than Karnivool. Karnivool have a decent following (especially considering how inactive they are most of the time) but birds are a household name by this point. They’ve had 3 massive radio hits (plans, lanterns, good lord) and played the AFL grand final which is basically the Australian equivalent of the super bowl. I prefer Karnivool by far though and hopefully a new album won’t be too far away.

This album is......ok. I mean, no song is outright bad but there’s not a whole lot of greatness here. Designed, when home calls and Addison are pretty meh. They try way too hard to write massive, catchy choruses on some songs (two of us, dive). The chorus in two of us in particular is so damn obnoxious and annoying. Dive had a lot of potential until the big, sugary chorus came in. The lyrics are also very cringy at times. Kenny in general is a good lyricist but damn, some real eye roll material through out the album.

I’d rate their albums - universes=self titled>brace>day one>March fires>human design.

Why do I feel like you'd say that about every "breakup album" in existence no matter who's writing...

Nah, I love a good break up song. Birds have written them before too - If this ship sinks, the gap. Both of those songs have great lyrics however (and are better than anything on human design.

I recently discovered that Ian of Karnivool was in this band. Listened to a couple tunes and I lost some respect for the guy.

I don’t even know if I want another Karnivool album if this is the kind of lyrics and topics we’ll get from him.

To be fair, early Birds of Tokyo and their sound then was actually quite good and very catchy. It’s just devolved a lot since 2010.

Can't hate on Kenny for actually doing something that makes money. The music industry is a hard place.

NonApplicable - This album really isn’t the best one to judge their quality by. It’s definitely their softest and worst. Their discography varies wildly. The album that preceded this one is basically a better Muse album than anything Muse have put out in ages. Universes and the Self Titled are also fantastic rock albums. Not prog (though it does border it at points) but great songwriting.
