Naturally you’re exempt. Have to keep up the Pots family lifecycle. Before they become Lords, they must first be silent potato children, seen and not heard

As much as I like being optimistic about the good in others

That idea resonates with me

I shouldn't indulge in this conversation but hey, I'm not perfect. I hate the discourse about politics which sees it as somehow separate to our daily lives or personal identities. People from the US are the worset at this but its generally a thing in liberal democracies to somehow think that politics is just a thing a thing over there and not an inherant influence on our daily lives, relationships and self-identity. Its actually more childish to simply think that we should somehow "expunge" ourselves of politics outside of voting for someone every 4 years because you aren't able to analyse your self and your environement and realise that everything in it is informed by power relationships (i.e. politics).

Its totally reasonable that your are just unable to have a relationship with someone who has radically different politics and world view to you. I'm (broadly-speaking) a leftist, and I can have relationships with liberals, even right-wing liberals, quite easily despite having a severely different outlook on society, capital and politics to them. But I can't maintain a relationship with an out-and-out reactionary in the same way that you can't have a relationship with someone thats an "asshole" - their personal identity, opinions and actions are too repulsive for me to have a positive relationship. Just because someone's family doesn't make them immune to how I would treat other people, only that I'm willing to tolerate more for the sake of family.

I don't think Bolm is really making an equivalnce between the grief of cancer and the "grief" of someone family more reactionary. He wrote a whole album (one of the saddest albums I've listened to lyrically) about losing his mother to cancer and then a whole follow up about how he's dealt with moving on since, and like, two throw away lines about losing people to reactionary politics. Hes merely taking a little poetic license about how from a purely objective (non-emotional) point of view, the outcomes the same - they're absent from his life.

Anyway, after this stupid wall of text heres my thoughts on the review:

neg'd because the it got a bit to ranty and quoting a whole song is bad. Either critique a specific part, or just provide a specific example (a few lines, you can quote individual lines as well to make a point line by line) of your issue. I can see the beginning of an actually interesting critique of their musical development, but needs more specifics, and perhaps better choice of words rather than "simplify". The most objective thing I can see about Touche Amore's devevlopment is that they've gradually introduced more complexity to their sound, without taking any major departues from their sound. Stage Four intrdouced more layering compared to previous releases, sounding a little more like La Dispute although not quite to the same exteny as them. Lament has continued that trend with more diversity and complexity in their sound. Whether you think that is a good thing remains to be seen, but imo, this is their most complex sounding record to date.

I am friends with several people who have severely different political opinions.
It's called being able to have civil discussions and be rational, also known as civil discourse.

The best part of my story is that my other friend, the friend from my op's fiance, was weaponized in this boycott as she is black. They told his parents that they should be ashamed of themselves for having friends with different political views over for dinner because their soon to be daughter-in-law is black. Said daughter-in-law found out about this and her response was "fuck you, dont speak for me, your parents are fucking awesome."

That’s a nice made up story, lord. So weird.

Veks, you sound incredibly enlightened and civil. You should start a blog.
