The main difference between this and other mastodon is the songs are shorter; stuff isn't dragged out as long. I think it's refreshing, I don't think every prog metal song has to be 8+ minutes long. Often that just ends up having the same riff repeated way too much anyway. Call it "going soft" or "poppy" or whatever but it's entertaining so who cares.
