This is Cave's best work. Apologies to Boatman's Call, Good Son and Skeleton Tree.

I love how wild that top 4 is in my world
you're looking at bottom 2(? - need to check Nocturama again), bottom 4 and then literally my fave / second fave
It's a weird concoction on some levels, but it also makes sense if you just like Cave as dreary as possible. Sad boi Cave is (therefore) very polarising to me it seems, given how they sit so far apart on the quality spectrum

yeah lol that pool is the essence of Cave if he's what you have instead of cigarettes (and none of your friends smoke)
can't deny he caters hard to that niche, but he's got more than enough classics where he sings with blood in his cheeks (and no timeline where Boatman is viewed as a preferable album to NMSWP will ever be a good one)

“Skeleton Tree does, for sure”
The only later day NC album that holds up is Push the Sky Away. Awesome album

Boatman's Call was a revelation to me. I grew up in Melbourne and saw Cave a LOT throughout the 90s. I loved his fire and passion and to this day songs like Mercy Seat, From Her to Eternity, Up Jumped the Devil, The Carny, Papa Won't Leave You Henry, Deanna, Tupelo, etc. are amongst my all-time favourites. But when Boatman's Call was released, and the first notes of Into My Arms hit me... Wow. It was like nothing Cave had released before. I fell in love with it.
NMSWP just didn't live up to the huge expectations I had.
But Cave is like that, you could ask 15 fans what their favourite album is and get 15 different answers.

My all time favorite from him is No More Shall We Part but he is one of those artists that I can see why various people latch on to different parts of his work with such vigor. The only other artist I have gotten this much enrichment from in life is Motorpsycho and the fanbase is split across all their records as well

Agreed, excellent choice for a single. Really bridges the gap between the ambience of records like this and Skeleton Tree with some of their brighter rock aesthetics of the past.

It really soars; can't think of another Cave track anything like this.

It’s a relief that Nick Cave seems to be going back to making actual music again. Really didn’t think he’d recover after this
