I always used to think the first half destroyed the latter half, but the last few songs really grew on me over the two years i've been listening to this and yeah, Archers and Handcuffs are perfect back to back.

This is no way a five. The first half is great, it has flow, rhythm and the rest but then it completely goes to shit. The songs of the second half are far weaker but even that isn't the main issue, it seems that after Welcome to Bangkok they just threw the rest of the tracks in any order and called it an album.
The insturmentals are sound enough (especially Untitled, WTB is a little flat on record) but they don't do anything they are supposed to do, they don't act as a bridge if anything they only make the album more disjointed.
With You Won't Know, Limousine and Jesus Christ they have some very strong songs but they still few in a few relics from when they were a bad band which are total mood killers.
Lyrically as well it can be really bad. He seems to think that throwing out inane metaphors makes for good lyrics, yet at the same time he's got some great lines. Take Limousine for example. In that song he describes the girl as a "Satellite" and "a tiny boat with oars" amongst other equally bad references. That is such lazy writing, in no way is she any of those things and neither are they related to her in any way. That is really crappy writing. At the same time he wrote, "I'll never have to buy adjacent plots of earth/We'll never have to rot together underneath dirt" The rhyming there is so forced and grade school standard it's embarassing to read.
However, all is not lost in the same song he wrote, "And in the choir, I saw our sad messiah. He was bored and tired of my laments. He said "I died for you one time, but never again..." which is probably the best line he's written.
What this album has is potential, it's not great lyrically, musically, vocally or by any other measure and has serious flow problems but it has moments and even songs which are very good showing they can and may make something great in the future. This Message Edited On 10.06.08

the bridge of 'not the sun' is seriously the most amazing 30 seconds or w/e in music ever haha, yup. when it breaks into triplets, they're in the golden zone. sadly, the lyrics are quite weak on that track.
Lucas is definitely the worst song on the album other than maybe Hadncuffs "Luca" is not the worst song. In fact, I'd say it's one of the pinnacle moments of the album.
Allmusic agrees... wait, nm. They've changed their review in the last 2-3 months. typical.

Do you think there is some objective scale that you can measure the worth of his lyrics by? The presence of lines you find great and ones you don't like doesn't make him a lazy writer. And Brand New has always rocked.

Pretty much all good lyrics should be A) Insightful and B) Articulate
Jesse Lacey almost always succeeds with B but frequently fails with A.
That's not to say I don't listen to bands who frequently fail on both counts but in terms of being a good lyricist they are to me the crucial issues.

I don't particularly care for At the Drive In at all. More of a Fugazi man.
