since syd died i think that pink floyd should go on a tribute tour for him. in one of their sets, it would kick ass if they played all of piper in honor of syd

Somehow, I don't think that's going to happen.

I know it seems unlikely but a tribute tour would be great.

If you understand that Piper isn't Dark Side, then yes, you should find this album great.

This album is probably one of the better albums ever made. Its so strange, yet many of the melodies is so catchy and very much english late 60's pop, but way much better.

Lucifer sam might just have one of the best refrains ever. I dont think its the best floydalbum though, i like the really trippy floyd, around -71. Disc 2 (the live part) of Ummagummma cant be beated.

I dont like Dark side of the moon. Really overrated. So is the wall. It might be great rock albums, but it aint good floyd albums.

Intrestellar overdrive is more hendrix kind of freak out jam, and Echoes is much more sophisticated and delicate.

the psychedelic aspect of this album makes every song on it one of my favorites. simply amazing, from a sober pov no less

This is a non-sober album and you can tell. really raw.

But also fucking awesome.

Okay, so on these forums Piper at the Gates receives almost entirely positive reception. For the most part I agree that this was a landmark, not just for Pink Floyd, but for rock music as a whole. Syd Barret's style has proved influential to many modern alternative acts, most notably, R.E.M. However this album doesn't sound to similar to any of these modern groups, nor any groups of old. BE WARNED FLOYD FANS! If you started with Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, or Wish You Were Here, and eventually migrated to Animals, or even Meddle, you probably will be disappointed. This album lacks any catchy hooks or riffs. Even for someone who has dabbled in psycadelic music, this album most likely will leave you longing for your copy of The Wall. And a piece of my opinion... Barret's playing doesn't hold a candle to Gilmour's.

^This album kills "the wall" as well as "animals", Barrets guitar playing is execptional, different yes, but still brilliant. I preffer Barrets vocals to Waters' any day. why didn't you rate this album?
