Ya, Harlequin Forest is probably my favorite song every by Opeth, but this is more as a whole.

I love Ghost of Perdition, but I find this much more interesting than Ghost Reveries

Yeah, GR had some better songs (like the Grand Conjuration, I really love that track) but this is just better.
Ghost Reveries has some better individual songs (Ghost of Perdition, Harlequin Forest), but this one is sooo much easier to listen to all the way through
My thoughts exactly. Honestly, I have to side with the (relative) minority and say that I prefer the second half of the album. It sounds more focused, intentional. Tracks like Heir Apparent and Lotus Eater are wonderful, but they're also pretty standard Opeth. Tracks like Porcelain Heart (which is my favorite song on the album despite the hate) and Hessian Peel show their progressive edge more, and the transitions on them are just perfect. Possibly my favorite Opeth album. Watershed is right imho.

I would have liked The Grand Conjuration more if they didn't repeat the same main riff for the past three or so minutes of the song.

Oh, and Nick Butler's Sound Off is spot on, he should do a full review of this.

Coil is so awesome. Opeth is the only band that can make a 3 minute song sound so epic.

Yeah Porcelain Heart is pretty awesome.
And also that off-time drum part that a lot of people are complaining about adds to the song imo. Axe even does a small bit of a 6/8 clave which was Lopez' signature beat.

^^^Yeah, I don't know jack shit about the technicality of it all, but the first few times I heard it, it sounded way off, but after a handful more listens, it actually goes perfectly, especially all the snare hits towards the end, there's a kind of twisting/rising thing going on (how's that for a technical explanation lol)

I am currently going insane listening to this album. So far, best metal album of the year, no doubts about that.
Also, another favourite part of this album is the part in The Lotus Eater between 5:44 and 6:22 with the little poppy beat and cool keyboards. Simply WOW!

Some people just have stupid opinions!
