St. Anger was the first Metallica album I listened to (ever), and I was suitably impressed by what I heard. However, after having hungrily devoured the rest of their catalog from Kill 'Em All to Death Magnetic, I feel that it is definitely one of their weakest albums (if not the weakest). It does have its moments (my favourite numbers are the title track, Frantic, and Shoot Me Again), and I do admire the overall raw-ness of the mix and the sense of sincerity and vulnerability inherent to it...but some of the songs just trundle along rather aimlessly - All Within My Hands and The Unnamed Feeling are probably the best examples of what I would call a turgid pace.
Still, it isn't really as bad as most make it out to be; I find I like this paragraph of yours the best: "This anger turns itself into musical form, as the "trash-can snare" has so much reverb that it's almost like a guitar noise, and the resultant triple hammer of Hetfield, Hammett and Ulrich can go from angry to angrier to flat-out feral." It is indeed an apt description of the album's clenched and gritty feel, which is probably the work's greatest strength.
