i really do not understand why people don't like city of echoes.
It's the same reason you posted for not liking this at first except it never grew on me, just kind of lingered and wore out its welcome.

As a drummer unfortunately i find all of pelican's previous records near-unlistenable thanks to what i see as a complete musical misfit in the drummer, I never got more than a few tracks through before becoming unbearably annoyed, despite the brilliance of the other musicians in the band.
This release is such a relief, finally a pelican record I can listen to. The drummer, while still not up to par in feeling and groove with the likes of the Isis or Jakob can-bashers, at least takes enough of a back seat to allow the guitarists and bassist to work their magic. Much better effort.

i feel that the rudimentary style of their drummer is, in essence, a way to try and not overdo the overall powerful aspects of the music itself.
i think it is a welcome relief from everyone wanting something stupidly complex in an overtly atmospheric, subtle, yet powerful style of music.
it doesn't have to be hard to play to be effective, is all im saying...

This is why I give people like IRAI high fives around here (as uncool as that may be).

Got this on vinyl the other day but haven't had time to listen to it yet, looking forward to it though.

you are blind then. have you heard Australasia or The Fire In Our Throats... because that's all you have to listen from this band, everything else in unnecessary unless you like the band or their genre

I love pelican and I love post metal but this is just bland
