I hate the word "sellout". I wish people would stop using it.



It's true the album is meant to gain more listeners... But guess what? It did... & a lot more than anyone could have ever imagined! And the percentage of those listeners who would then go on to explore the band's back catalogue & maybe prefer those albums to this would be significant.



I've said it before & I'll say it again; If a band can bring what is usually a non-mainstream genre of music to the masses, then that is a talent that should be viewed positively... Not with childish "You Sold Out" chants.

I agree that can get out of hand... but I think sellout criteria is not just mass appeal. Take Green Day for example... Dookie was essentially the same music as their first two albums, but on a major label. I don't they sold out because they didn't compromise their artistic vision strictly to sell more records - that's the only thing I take issue with; I feel Metallica compromised their art for money.

I highly doubt they went into the studio with a "sellout" attitude. It's obvious that after recording AJFA they wanted to take a more laid back approach towards this album.

I actually can't comment as I honestly haven't heard their first 2 albums. But Green Day's latter releases are a good example on this subject because some people felt they sold out with their latest stuff. They didn't. It's just their form of progression... for better or worse (which is irrelevant).



And I think that's where it all comes down to personal opinion. You personally feel they compromised art for money. And you are very much entitled to that opinion & have made a pretty good case for it. But other people would actually feel this album was a progression of sorts. Just because the riffs are simpler, etc... doesn't mean it cannot be a progression. Remember, what one person sees as a technical masterpiece, another can see as nothing but noise. Let's use Dillinger Escape Plan as an example here (Davey runs & hides). LOL
