It was part of that group of early/mid popular rap that was coming out, led by Eminem, Dr. Dre, D12, 50 Cent, etc. But I remember hearing this not expecting a thing and being thoroughly surprised. Was one of the first times I actually appreciated a rap album and showed me that there actually is good hip-hop (I was like 13).
