One thing I like about this (and I probably didn't state this clearly enough) is that they don't seem to be consciously trying to be dark, that they aren't, as you wrote earlier, Austin, "fully committed to their aesthetic". I think that the moment your aesthetics take precedence over your actual content the music suffers.
