definitely. it's more or less a condensed companion piece to 77 Live.

how are they doing anything right, at all?
like even if you do like that generic, shitty metalcore sound, there's many bands that do it better, right?

Can you lower this to a 1 just because of the album art?

Great review. However, I am mildly confused by your argumentation process and the number with which you end up rating the album (1.5). You say that they are “next big thing” and have "surprisingly adept riffs and breakdowns"; then, they also display "flourishes of skill". However, the only argumentation that you offer for a 1.5 is a.) the lack of "a single tinge of creativity or cognizant material to the mix" and b.) the lack of a reason to listen to them.

In my head (and this is strictly my reasoning and I understand fifteen billion percent if people don't share it at all) this is not enough reason to condemn an album to a 1.5 rating. That's a 2.5 or a 2.0 at the very worst. This album sounds reasonably competent and doesn't have any objectively bad songs, so giving it a 1.5 sounds very harsh and almost makes it seem like you're overcompensating to prove the point that your local music scene is sub-par. Obviously I don't know at all if I am correct (not having heard this), but I thought you'd appreciate some perspective on how a neutral reader might perceive your write-up (which I feel is top-notch, btw).

Cheers Sea.

thanks for the criticism and reading Irving, I appreciate it and I know where you're coming from : ) but...

did you see the last page of this thread by any chance? explains it a tad, but I can more.

firstly, yes I only name a few faults with the album. an album doesn't need to be full of glaring mistakes for it to be atrocious... like here, it could simply be a few really bad missteps.

Why is this so bad, then?

Well, there's absolutely nothing creative going on whatsoever. This is a bunch of 17 year-olds who can play instruments well, but they're not writing music. I strongly believe that when making any art you should give the viewer some incentive to look or listen, where this just feels like ... like I said... some cover songs that offer nothing new.

Also, ConsiderPhlbas pointed this out the best somewhere else, but I don't think an album should necesarily start at a 5.0 and then for each subsequent misstep be subtracted points, if that makes sense.

And just because it's reasonably competent in setting out to achieve what they did (generic Hot Topic metalcore), doesn't mean this is worthwhile whatsoever. I think it's absurd that artists are judged on "oh well he plays the guitar well!" sometimes rather than the sounds that are actually being produced. Yes, instrumental skills are usually necessary for an album to be above-average, and it can certainly detract for an album, but by no means is it something I solely base an album's rating upon-- here, I based it on the fact that this album is unnecessary trash.

Hope that helps you understand where I'm coming from just a tad!

That was a very clear and thorough explanation indeed. I definitely see where you're coming from a bit better now =) Obviously I have no real perspective on the matter, not having heard this album (or even read the threads in this review =p) but I totally get your train of thought now.

I don't know where best to put this, but I will add that I also totally agree that no album should start at 5.0 and then be kicked back notches for every mistake.

In any case, thanks for humouring me Sea - that was a good exchange of ideas and I feel that I am a bit better off than when I started =)

This sucks. I had high expectations for the drumming after seeing online videos and hearing it on the

first couple releases, but it seems like he held back everything that made him interesting.

No reason for repeat listens. pos'd
