@Dieyuppiescum91, The lyrics aren't the only reason I didn't like this album. I talked about his lack of originality also and how he has talent but doesn't use it to his full potential. And When you say the songs being similar doesn't matter to you, that may be a personal bias. I just don't liek listening to an album where it's hard to tell the songs apart. In fact, my entire second paragraph is about the music itself, if you want more proof that I didn't only dislike this album because of the lyrics. I only talk about the lyrics in my third paragraph, with some other mentions thrown in.
And on a different note, going back to read through the second paragraph I realized I described his voice as "whiny" alot . . .

I found it odd how even though he's a "professional music producer", he comes up with such God awful
lyrics.
Though, I honestly the first two singles: Just The Way You Are and Grenade a lot. But yeah, they were
so overplayed it was sickening. As for the rest of the album, it wasn't bad - nothing too
interesting.
He does have a whiny voice and isn't very original, but I don't usually care though, this is pop.

This album kind of sucks but holy good God can this kid sing. He's got the whole 60s soul motown doo-wop voice down PAT, get some good music behind that and he could be great. He did a really good rendition of the song "Valerie" on the MTV VMAs I thought. Reminded me a bit of Sam Cooke.

"Bashing an album solely on the basis that you don't like the lyrics?"
lyrics on the songs I've heard are pretty awful. Grenade and Lazy Song are cringe-worthy.

Why is it that so many people on this site are still in that horrible teenage phase of thinking anything that's remotely popular can't have merit?

It comes with the territory unfortunately Atavanhalen.
Musically this isn't like an outstanding album or anything but there are some good points to it and I love, love, love this kid's voice. He's got one of the best soul-music voices I've heard since the days of Motown and Stax in the 60s and 70s. Everytime I see him on TV performing I feel like I've gone into a time warp and am watching American Bandstand or the Ed Sullivan Show or some shit with some new Motown artist back in the 60s.
Once this kid matures and develops as a musician and songwriter, who knows how good he could be.

I agree with pretty much everything you've said there. I think he's a solid hitwriter, but that doesn't always mean brilliant songwriting. It just means it's effective, and the guy knows his way around pop hooks - I mean, he's had at least half a dozen hits in the past 18 months.
