You really know your stuff. I never knew that. I'll make a note of that as it will probably come in handy if I decide to sing in a band.

Uh, yes I can. I've seen videos of him doing that god-awful squawking of his. His face and neck are tensed up, his eyes either squeezed shut or bugging out... wrong, wrong, wrong. All that tension is the symptom of bad technique.
Besides that, the only way to achieve the tone he creates is by doing it wrong. If you do it right, it shouldn't sound like that. It's actually easy to tell the difference once you listen to various sources of harsh vocals long enough.
There's a section in our forums called The Jam Session. Merkaba is our vocals guru, and has councilled numerous board members in their learning to sing. He has experience with clean vocals, harsh, screaming, growling, the whole nine yards. He's well-versed in all the techniques and has more than ample experience. If you ask him, I'm sure he will explain it better than me.

You may have seen videos like that but i've seen videos of him doing just the opposite. And you can't say its wrong because how do you know he doesn't want it to sound like that and thats why he's doing it?

Just ask that dude steer said. He'll explain it.

That's not the point. The point is that his technique fucking awful. No vocalist with real training would ever do that to themselves.
I don't care what sound you're trying to achieve, if you do it right, it shouldn't hurt. And I've spoken to people who have seen Heafy blow his voice out in the middle of a set and Corey had to take over vocal duties. If you know what you're doing, that never happens.

I admit I lost some of my respect for Jon Oliva of Savatage after I learned that most of his career was spent with bad breathing technique and he would always end the tour with his voice wrecked. I did appreciate that he recognized this flaw in himself and got a professional coach to teach him how to break his bad habits.

MrKite that has nothing to do with it. I've heard of many good singers who blew out their voices just because they didn't take care of them. Besides it doesn't really matter now because unless you didn't know he doesn't scream anymore but i'm sure you have a problem with his singing technique too.

Yeah, it's a cookie-cutter copy of James Hetfield. Don't get me wrong, I like Hetfield's voice. It's more the concept than anything that bothers me.

Actually, I do. Aside from the fact that I'll bet money he still hasn't gotten a professional voice coach, he sounds like James Hetfield more than ever. And Hetfield's voice is like ear gonorrhea for me. So I hope you can understand my vitriol.

Thats all anyone ever says. I really don't think he does but thats just the excuse for everyone to use as yet another reason to insult them. I've heard plenty of people say that he sounds like Hetfield but he can actually sing while Hetfield can't.

You jackass, it says in your soundoff that he sounds like Hetfield. Anyways, Hetfield actually sings pretty well on Load and ReLoad.

There's a difference between an excuse and a reason.

Oh Jesus. I see this getting worse before it gets better.

No, it's not an excuse you feeble minded ignoramous, it's a reason. People don't like the album because he completely ripped off James Hetfield's vocal style, they don't use that fact as an excuse not to like it. No one needs an excuse not to like this album. There are so very, very many reasons to dislike it there's no reason to make more up.This Message Edited On 01.01.07

No, for me it's a reason. His voice sucks, and I cannot support someone who deliberately ignores his own god awful technique. Heafy is in a position where he has absolutely no excuse for his shoddy vocal habits.

I know i've said this before, but this album is my guilty pleasure. I really don't see much wrong with it other than heafy's shitty screaming.
The crusade and ember to inferno i don't really care for, but i really like this album for some reason. I love the last two tracks, "drownded and torn asunder" and "pull harder." Some great metalcore there i have to admit.

Like Light to Flies is a definitive metalcore song. I also really enjoy When All Light Dies off of Ember to Inferno, that's probably my favorite Trivium song.
