not counting this, their past three albums have been better than anything Gorguts have done w/o Steeve Hurdle, and even their debut was as good as anything that's not Erosion.

I'm gonna go out and say Ulcerate (since EiF) has done more with progression and experimentation with death metal than Isis has post-metal.

There's so many factors to consider when calling a band one of the greatest of their kind. Technicality? Quality, and how long did they make quality music? Did they help establish something in metal like with Neurosis, Isis, or Dissection(just to name a few). Just many things to think about.
