Okay, I'll stop being an ass.
It is my personal opinion that I don't think any context is going to make this album any better (or worse). Album could've actually been good and still meant whatever it meant to the artist.

This album is pretty much Mac attempting to do his best Haroumi Hosono impersonation.

Mac had his day but his ship set sail right around the time This Old Dog came out, no matter what people say about that album, he’s not worth my time anymore

I also wasn't excited by This Old Dog. Stuff before that is pretty good if limited. loved him in late high school early college for sure

this kind of music only has so much staying power, he was lucky to make such a solid follow up to 2. 2 is as good as this music can sound

mac yearns for those days, ah those days . . . it was bigger than the music, mac recalls, it was an all encompassing hug an avalanche of impressions ya and so unidentifiable as a thing from any one direction but it had to be a good thing right? the people liked jizz jazz right? he admittedly had lost a lot of sleep over the question of his music’s possible genre implications. now mac sits in his backyard. perhaps it is the same backyard in which he once was grillin burgs n dawgs an open space invitation to the fans and marc hogan from pitchfork even showed up! but the genre moved on. mac lights another cig, the last one but he fingers a fresh pack closer his trembling fingers for a moment crinkling the wrapping. he is chain smoking through one wayne g which hit spotify too late for weed day unfortunately but life’s hard mac — he’s halfway through the album and we all believe he can muster up the strength to make it all the way to the end

I listened to about the first 40 tracks but now the plan is just go back to the beginning and listen to one track each day for now, just a few times in that day, rate it on RYM and see what the ratings look like when I reach the end…
