This album seems to personify the phrase 'lolwut'

It seems to me that there's already too much five stars albums. It shouldn't be that way. A five star album should be a serious thing, an album which really stands out, one that can stand repeated listens, and remains fresh. Something that would be better described as magical, unexplainable. There are not really a lot of such albums.
California is one of such albums. Mr. Bungle proves that the only thing that matters is to have an idea, something to say, not neccesarily lyrical-wise. It's not their most technical album, nor their most weird, nor the longest, and yet, it is arguably their best. What happened here?
These day, bands who really don't have anything to say, hide behind their "technicality". "Hey, maybe we can't write really good songs, but look at my technique, how fast the drummer can play, look how heavy or weird we are, how many musical passages we can cut and paste and make an album". Yeah, this happens a lot these days.
Mr. Bungle actually could pull that off. At their most focused and least weird, they managed to surpass most bands' output.
From the moment California starts, until it ends, it's a musical journey. Every song is unique and has a particular vibe. Never tries to repeat itself. It surprises me how it never gets old. This is what great music is.
I'm not sure I can call this a masterpiece, but a classic album, sure it is.

That last track is an addictive one

I'm guessing I would love this since I like Faith No More? This a good place to start?

Mike Patton is here, but this is nothing like faith no more. It is very different and you will probably get turned off on your first listen. Other than that though, this is a great album. I'm probably not the supreme source on these guys, but yes, this is a great source to start with. I'd try out a few songs on youtube before picking this up though. Check out: Retrovertigo, Pink Cigarette, and, Sweet Charity

I'd start with either this one or their s/t. Though, I don't like their s/t very much, it's not as crazy as this one; it's like circus/polka/metal. This one is a lot of all sorts of things. It takes a while to get into them.

Yeah just looked at 'Retrovertigo' it was very nice. I'll check out those other songs too, cheers.

it's an awesome album, but it just seems like such a leap from where Patton got his start (eg: Epic, Surprise! You're Dead!, Zombie Eaters, ect.)

I could have sworn Mark Prindle's review for this album was pretty much exactly the same as this one...
Just checked. Either I'm drunk, or, he editted it.
Regardless, I've seen a review for this album following the same concept used in this here review.
Either that, or I'm drunk, who knows.
