This is better than EVERYTHING in their discography; one of the single most creative albums I've ever had the pleasure of hearing too.
This album lacks any catchy hooks or riffs. this album most likely will leave you longing for your copy of The Wall.
Perhaps a better way to describe it is that Barret and post-Barret Pink Floyd are two different animals entirely.
That being said, Piper has plenty of catchy hooks and riffs.

I agree. I've had Lucifer Sam stuck in my head for entire days
Fun as hell to play, too.

^I named my dog "Lucifer sam" cause i love the song so much. Anyone who says piper has no catchy hooks is an idiot, "Lucifer sam" for example has a verse/chorus song structure which I find rather catchy, bike is also rather contagious, just buy hearing someone humming the tune you get it stuck in your head for days.

Okay, okay, I personally like this album a lot, but I stand by my statement that it will leave many running like hell for their copy of the wall. I'd also argue that Barret is much more unconventional than Gilmour, resulting in a sound that will be a major turn off for most casual Floyd listeners. Why else do you think you hear songs on the radio off of every Floyd album but this one? That's the sad truth, most think of Syd's music as being selectively for the stoned, which many of us, INCLUDING ME, know is untrue.
|
| |
No, it's true. Only someone stoned out of their mind would enjoy this boring music.

^I have never had any drugs in my entire life and I still enjoy this album.
this album is not very radio friendly, along with many of its psychadelic counterparts it is shunned and often forgotten and as a result is not and probably never will be a very accessible album to most floyd fans.
|
| |
Accessible and pre-Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd shouldn't be in the same sentence haha. I think a lot of Floyd fans are looking for something a little out there. I really want to check this out, but I'm still working on Ummagumma.

I want this desperately.
Did Syd only play on two albums?

Technically, Syd was only in the band for Piper, but the song Jugband Blues on A Saucerful Of Secrets was written and sung by Syd.

Oh, really?
Did he leave the band because of that breakdown he had or was that after he left?

Ive been listening to Lucifer Sam over and over again. I want to get this album.

No, he left because he was getting incontrollable.

So, they threw him out.
This is quite the album. I can tell you one thing; I wouldn't have been sad if they continued on with a sound more similair to this.

I enjoyed this album immensly. Syd at his best. I think this was one of the best albums from that era, with only Sgt. Pepper rivalling it.
My favourite song is The Gnome. Bike was pretty enjoyable too.
All in all though, I find slight flaws that irritated me within your review. It was an okay job overall.

well in this i am quite happy for you. idk why piper gets so much hate on sputnik- as far authentic 60's psychedelic goes this is right at the top.
good man 711, good man.

Yeah, its very underrated. It really gets overlooked in light of the more popular Pink Floyd albums like The Wall and Wish You Were Here.
