Seriously this is a 3 at it's lowest. There are some cool ideas here even if they are being executed by complete douches.

There's no way this is 3x better than MotS at its lowest.

What made Agalloch good was that they used to play what is generally a boring style of music, very well. Marrow of the Spirit is SOOOOO boring, because that "x" factor was just not there anymore. It's all poor ideas that are long and drawn out, for no feasible reason whatsoever. This tries some new things and doesn't sound EXACTLY like every other black metal album out there. Granted, that doesn't mean all the ideas they tried here worked out, but some of them definitely do. The guitarwork is pretty cool at times and the drummer is undeniably sick. The songs are too long, but at the same time there are segments I definitely don't mind listening to for a few minutes. It's the band's stigma that definitely earns them so much scorn, GUARANTEED this wouldn't get railed on as much as it does if that Hunter guy wasn't a douche.

Yeah I think that's true to an extent. Some people hate these guys just because, like you said, he's a huge douche.

I just happen to think this sucks, the fact that the frontman is such a prick just adds insult to injury.

The fact that the vocalist is a douche has no effect on how good/bad this is from a musical standpoint, I just genuinely think it's that terrible.

Sure, but the Weaver brothers are huge hipsters as well (though not nearly on the level of Hendrix), but WitTR doesn't seem to get nearly as much hate because they're actually good.

[On WitTR]: And to my knowledge they haven't gone on video talking about romanticism in black metal

and other pretentious bs. Their lyrics might be full of pseudo-inspirational spiritual hippy shit

but the lyrics only convey the general idea of what the music itself is supposed to represent, and

the words themselves aren't very distinguishable so the lyrics themselves hardly matter.

This dude just looked like a hipster + had some pretentious idea + actually described it in detail,

so people gave him crap for it. I will say that I don't hate his really sharp raspy scream, though.

In the proper [more chaotic? More raw and loud] setting his voice could really work, but it's not

used that well here.

And the "burst beat" is a cool idea, but I don't think it's pulled off that well here. If you were

doing some weird tech death then a burst beat could fit wonderfully, but just thrown into a black

metal song that random slow-fast transition doesn't work well, even for "tech-bm" like this.

Idk man, a lot of this sounds pretty pretentious to me, especially the monologue that starts at 2:47.
