why do you think this album was influenced by the "mainstream"? this has zero of the "mainstream"
appeal that MPP and to a lesser extent strawberry jam had. the people responsible for anco's rise to
popularity (pitchfork n frans), neglect this album.

This album was influenced by the "mainstream"? Are you shitting me? This is probably their most unique album, in terms of diverse influences and just generally sounding unlike anything else in the world. Merriweather was unique too but totally influenced by the musical climate of the time (see: dance beats, neon synths, heavy basslines, general emphasis on melody and low end).
I just don't see how anybody can complain about this album being "too poppy" when they put What Would I Want? Sky in their top three AnCo songs ever.

ugh guys he didnt say it was mainstream. his point in his soundoff (which is what I'm assuming youre misreading) is that the mainstream success they experienced after merriweather supposedly caused an intentional uglying on their part.
