"I hope after Trench's "true" sequel is released, Melon looks into the lore (Like he did with Trench) and does a re-review to understand the storytelling this album is really trying to do.

Absolutely, on surface level, to a casual listener with no knowledge of the band, it's a less than mediocre pop record. But that's quite literally the point behind the creation of this album and its place in their discography.

Some may call it a cop-out for just making a shitty record, but Tyler wasn't writing this album for outside listeners. It's a fan service, lore-expansion record that was birthed from the idea of isolation due to quarantine and how it could tie into the storyline that began with Trench."

yeah, I’ll believe that in hindsight when another album is released with a genuine tie in... until now, it’s surface level pop that I happen to enjoy

Their popularity fell off a cliff when Trench came out yeah, I thought Trench was actually the most stripped back album they've done, that album is very weird, it starts with Jumpsuit and Levitate, and then it becomes a somber and sentimental album after that. I think their peak was when Heathens came out, either that or Stressed Out, back when they where a near inescapable band... I'm not gonna lie that kind of soured my likeness for the band right out the gate, I was sick of hearing the damn Blurryface songs on the radio, Lane Boy, Ride, fucking hell lol.

I don't know what happened but I went from completely hating this to actually liking it in the blink of an eye.. Fun little not-so serious pop record with a happy vibe. sitting in the 3 - 3.5 area.

I'm sure there's a weird "lore" reason for that too. but man I was hype for that album after Jumpsuit and Levitate came swinging out the gate and then just...it never gets that good again

Nobody cares about adding tracklists and correct album arts as much as I do I guess :^(

Something that just occurred to me: is this the first TOP record where God/religion isn't obviously a lyrical subject on any of the songs?

The funniest thing is seeing fans of the band desperately trying to fight against the criticisms, pushing that the album is bad for lore purposes. No one over the age of 14 gives a shit about the lore, and no band with a brain cell would deliberately make an album shit (Green Day are an exception, there’s no way Father of All was that bad by mistake)

I always check the subreddit from artists with new releases I wanna hear, and you're right. The argument fans use against critics basically comes down to "You just don't know the lore, so your opinion is bad".

Music should be good as a standalone thing. background story's or "lore" can only add certain things but don't define a record for me to appreciate.

Do think this is a fun little record tho, but will probably forget about it the coming month.

Never Take It is one of the worst songs I’ve ever had to sit through, I suppose the lore dictates it’s meant to make my ears bleed because Blurryface wanted it or something fucking backwards like that

Really? Seems like nothing better or worse than a bog standard alt rock song to me.

I'll be the first to admit I have a nostalgia-clouded bias with this band but to call anything on this record ear-bleedingly bad sounds borderline pathological lol

Even Melon wasn't that harsh

Pretty good review. Any fan of this band should keep listening, the album only gets better and better.

Good Day took a while to grow on me but the piano is now extremely catchy.

Shy Away and formidable are born all around great songs. This is the best lyricism and meaning you can get from pop music imo.

You mentioned bow the hook on Saturday is bad, I agree, but the rest of the song is so good it more than makes up for it. I would not call the song “mindless fun,” either. It is an expression of fighting depression and suicidal thoughts, eg the lyrics “life moves slow on the ocean floor, I can’t feel the waves anymore!” I think to fully appreciate this album, which is an album about joy, you need to know their previous works, which are all about darkness. What may seem like poppy, feel good tracks are actually much deeper theories about optimism.

Bounce Man is one of the chillest and most fun songs I’ve ever heard. For such a serious band it it a welcome change. It reminds me of Pink Floyd’s “San Tropez.” Completely out of character but absolutely awesome and tranquil.

The acoustics of this album are simply their best ever. I think the only major flaw with it is the drums are not a big feature of the album (they had to record in separate rooms because of Covid).

And I like how Redocrate is a super dark ending, but it doesn’t have the cringe emo feel of most of their other ending tracks. It’s actually catchy and enjoyable while being about an extremely dark topic and theme of their music: childhood suicide.

Good review though man. I signed up after reading this review.
