Yesterday is so fucking good...

Yesterday is a great song, easily my favorite off this. But still, this has nothing on God Loves Ugly, Lucy Ford, Sad Clown Bad Dub II, even Overcast! and Seven's Travels. I'd say it's about on par with YCIHMFWH, maybe slightly better.

This is my first Atmosphere, I'll get more soon, probably starting with Ugly.

I'd definitely say start with God Loves Ugly, it's their most consistent record. Lucy Ford and Sad Clown Bad Dub II aren't far behind though.

Yeah, I've been meaning to get more since I got this a while ago, but I forgot about it until Yesterday came up on shuffle last night.

So I've been listening to this a lot the last few days and I have to agree with InVeigh. This disc just doesn't stand up in comparison to previous Atmosphere records. Yesterday and Guarantees are two stellar tracks, everything else is...not Atmosphere. I hope the next record regains some of the passion and fire of previous records.

Slug's always had a somewhat monotone delivery, but on this record it's borderline disinterested most of the time. But, the beats rule and when Slug IS actually on his game it's pretty special.

I agree, the one saving grace which stopped me from lowering the rating to a 2.5 is the way Slug tells the stories on many of the tracks. Even though I really don't like the delivery or the sampling/instrumentation, lyrically for the most part this record is solid.

yeah, some of his rhyme schemes are boring ("she knew what that part meant, so she took every piece out that apartment" -- that's like rhyming "cause" with "because", yuck). But I do enjoy how we went with telling a story on every track.
It's just that his stories used to have a deeper meaning, like they were all metaphors or allegories for a separate idea and all had a somewhat personal connection. These just seem like stories for the sake of stories most of the time.
Like, Woman With the Tattooed Hands wasn't JUST about him watching a woman masturbate in her apartment, it was about the nature of the human conscience.

yeah I know what you mean. It works for certain songs and doesn't for others.
"("she knew what that part meant, so she took every piece out that apartment" -- that's like rhyming "cause" with "because", yuck)."
Even in certain songs on previous records the lyrics did not always showcase the greatest rhyming (ie. stop writing raps, and go play volleyball) so I guess the odd mistep doesn't bug me personally. In Her Music Box is a pretty decent song too.

comparing Aesop to Slug is like comparing Dillinger Escape Plan to Brand New -- what's the point?

they are within the same genre, you really cant use that analogy. a better one would be comparing wu tang to ATCQ
I would prefer ATCQ and aesop

I don't think I could choose between Aesop and Atmosphere, too close to call
