So, I finally got around to listening to Thrice for the first time last night. My conclusion: Everyone needs to get the fuck off their nuts. Nothin' all that special, imo.
You're basing this opinion on Thrice after listening to this - probably their least appreciated record since their debut. Listen to Vheissu, The Artist in the Ambulance or The Illusion of Safety then make a judgment.
Sounds like you're main gripe is with the rating. But people have different opinions; and yours
is probably wrong.
Not to mention the fact that the largest portion of this review deals with Beggars
itself.
I dare you to read this review again and say this to me with a straight face. I know more about Air
and Earth on this review than Beggars. Again, it isn't much about the rating, but its content.
I've just read Adam Knott's review and there is a very well written review, because the reviewer
clearly took his time to inform me about the record. And that's what I want when I read a review:
have a critic viewing about the subject its being reviewed.
Ok.

Hi straylight, I understand your issues with the review. I too think it's a little off balanced but I wanted to keep the review daintier than my usual ones for the sake of readability and couldn't include all of my thoughts about Beggars. What I think is important when talking about Thrice is how they evolve, because every album is so different. Talking about a Thrice album in its isolated world without the context of Thrice's career and previous albums doesn't capture the nuances of the album in question because so much of what they're doing, especially now that they have the luxury of self-producing, is about path that leads them to the sounds you're hearing on the album. Discussing the merits of Beggars is greatly informed by what Thrice learned in making The Alchemy Index, so while you may have read a lot about that album within the review, it was all in service of discussing Beggars. Also, one of my big points in my criticism is that they echo a lot of compositional devices from earlier in their career, so it makes a lot of sense that I'd have to reference back to earlier albums, particularly the most recent two, which have the largest affect on Beggars. As always, if you're not happy with this review, write your own.

Erroneous. I listened to a large sampling of their stuff spanning all of their releases. True, this is the only album I listened to straight through, but I definitely gave them a fair shot, considering all the praise they get.
That being said, everyone needs to get the fuck off their nuts.
I mean, just to be clear, I do like them. I think they're pretty good. Just not nearly as good as everyone makes 'em out to be.

Kane Cooper using grammar.
|
| |
Haha yeah, I noticed that, too. In my relatively short time here I feel like you and I, Waior, are two of the very few who actually do use proper grammar in their posts. Stands out when someone does!
|
| |
grammar is overrated in the scheme of things
|
| |
i'm even writing a book atm with no grammar

Well, it looks nice on you, Cooper. Except "different opinions; and yours" almost made me keel over.
Also find it cool that Greer responded legitimately.

ah yes the fabled Nick Greer Legitimate Response

"different opinions; and yours"

I like how I have no clue who any of you people are or where you came from but somehow you're guys are on a first name basis with me and are making comments about the way I am haha. Sometimes even an I know-you-so-well-bro-I'm-going-to-just-call-you-by-your-last-name basis.

To their defense, easier to say "Greer" or "Nick" or "Nick Greer" than "DFelon204409." lol.
