there are so many kind of awkward songs on cities that are almost really good but have way too layered choruses
adelaide, whisper and a clamour, hello alone, alexithymia, reclusion, and if i'm honest, (fin*) is fun but it's an absolute kind of mess
it's not just inconsistent on a song-to-song basis, but it has songs that like 75% awesome and 25% hammy
Hm, the lack of layering wasn't that jarring live, but it is weird not hearing the lines bleeding into each other (I'm assuming this is what you meant by layered?). Still, I never found that as anything to dislike. I can't disagree with (*fin) being a mess either, except by saying that it works for me (which is probably why I think it's so fantastic). But I always thought "A Clamor and A Whisper" was the perfect Anberlin alt. rock song. I love the chorus---it has a great melody, which is something missing since DitW in their rock songs (including Vital).
BTW breakingthefragile, I'll be happy to see your review of this. Don't listen to too much Anberlin before that, since I think this album could use a review from someone who isn't a fan.

Also it goes without saying that you have to review this, Waior

Yeah, if I can find the time to, I would love to. I hope people are getting the right impression by my never-being-here that it's almost impossible for me to make room for anything extracurricular. This I am mandating an exception for...

It is great but that's one of their most layered choruses. In my head, it just can't be performed and doesn't feel honest because it's unrealistic for Christian to be able to do all those lines without interrupting himself every chord change.

Definitely their second best after Cities. This is so good, I can't even decide on a favorite or least favorite since every song rules.

i really don't think cities is that great anymore. new surrender ftmfw

Of course. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

lines without interrupting himself every chord change. Yeah, I'm listening to a live
version and it just feels abrupt without vocal effects. Knowing that this can't be perfectly
reproduced live doesn't bother me as much when I'm listening to the studio-version of the album, but
I do see where you're coming from. Like in The Unwinding Cable Car, there's the "You're so
brilliant/Don't soon forget" repeating while Stephen croons "This is the correlation between
salvation and love..." and I think there's Stephen harmonizing in the background on top of the other
two layers. I don't know, I guess I just prefer to hear the band's vision of how their songs should
turn out, even if it's not possible to do live.

the first half of this album >>> the second half of this album
Type 3 is the only track that impressed me right off the bat in the second half.

Album is as close to perfect as this band has ever been. Can't say I'm too big on "Innocent" though. I would have liked something a bit more personal like "Take Me (As You Found Me)".

Yeah this album is awesome. The new As I Lay Dying is competing now for AOTY with this so I'm back to undecided in that scattergories.

On first listen...good, but not as consistent as Dark. Not sure why people here aren't doing as much comparison with that record since it was their last one, and their most consistent by far.

I've been saying this for a while, and a lot of the creative instrumentation and stuff on this is more resembling of DitW than Cities. Still, the overall sound of this is more like Citides. And yeah, DitW is like this to an extreme; a batch of consistently good songs with nothing that's truly superb and nothing that's bad.
