Although i will give you credit, i feel like if this wasn't an LP album the sputnik average wouldn't be anywhere near as low as a 1.5 probably like a 2.5 or something..

Before lecturing someone about objectivity maybe you should check whether you yourself are not showing huge signs of strong blind subjectivity, lest you might ridicule yourself.

You're definitely entitled to that opinion, but I feel like you're saying "Yeah, come on man, you gotta be objective and hate this like I do." People like to debate the merits of objectivity in music, but my view is simply this: you can measure music objectively to an extent, but I'd rather have something I personally enjoy than 40 minutes of technical precision that evokes no response whatsoever. I enjoyed this despite being fully aware of its basic structuring and lack of ambition, but that doesn't mean I'd prefer all music like this over, say, Pink Floyd or Metallica. It just means that I assess everything on an individual basis and rate on a scale that combines both technical factors and personal enjoyment/bias, where one can easily override the other if its virtues are strong enough.

Tbh this entire review reads as a slightly condescending rant towards supposed "haters" of the album by accusing them of having negative predispositions towards this thing. I find it troubling that valid criticisms (sterile production, banal lyrics, lack of overall originality) are being glossed over in such a fashion.

"The goals of pop forego the standards typically sought in most musical genres – the focus is generally on the melodies, hooks, and lyrics…basically how much you enjoy the damn thing."

That doesn't mean creativity and originality should be tossed out the window either. You'll find that the stand-out pop albums are primarily the ones that infuse their music with enough differences in their hooks and lyrics to set them apart from the crowd; in short, the ones on the cutting-edge. So yes, actually, creativity is very important when it comes to keeping music "popular", and I think you'll find it's for this reason that One More Light gets so many negative reactions; to my ears at least it's a lifeless retread of various pop trends from the past couple of years.

Of course each person evaluates things differently, and if that's how you look at pop then fair enough, but if you're trying to state that this is how others should view it as well then I'm going to strongly disagree with you.

So your point is:

"This album isn't very creative or original. It doesn't stand out therefore I give it 1 out of 5."

And you accuse someone of being condescending.

Watch lego batman.

An uncreative album is a legit critisism. I don't want to hear the same shitty album I've heard done better somehwhere else. And wtf does lego batman have to with this anything.

My point is that Sowing seems to be (perhaps unintentionally) criticizing the critiques of those who dislike the album by saying that they're coming in with a biased perspective, and I'm trying to say that I think the critiques of this album are valid and that it's not all down to just "oh Linkin Park goes pop haha instant 1"

Also I should say that this is a good review and I appreciate seeing a contrasting viewpoint, just throwing in my two cents as to how I felt certain parts of the review sounded

@Metalrain.

Lego Batman is an awesome movie.

"An uncreative album is a legit criticism." You are contradicting... nobody. Thanks for your irrelevant participation.

My point was : a lack of creativity doesn't justify a 1/5.

Well luckily it's not your job to tell me how I evaluate albums...fact of the matter is Linkin Park grates on me to begin with and to see that combined with music this banal is enough to justify such a score in my eyes

I don't think that's unfair at all. Parts of this review were certainly directed at people who came in predisposed to hating this because it is pop or because they've heard bad things about it in advance and didn't take the time to form an opinion of their own. It was not meant to be an indictment of anyone who dislikes the album - just a reminder that sometimes in music critics and fans get caught up in the hyperbole of a release and don't take the time to actually give it an impartial listen.

If you gave it a legitimate shot and still disliked it then that's totally valid. I just think there's more people who knee-jerk 1'd this than will care to admit.

So mature. You shut me up very well. There is nothing I can ad after that. Now you can carry on living in your bubble.

I'm not arguing about Linkin Park. I'm tired of seeing hordes of hyenas making ritual sacrifices and pretending there's a very rational reason and it's not their thirst for blood and their enjoyment of destroying something that is not the way they want it to be.

But I'll stop there you're right.

I agree. Although I think this album is bang average, the number of people who seemed to get so offended by the lead single especially, was hilarious. People starting giving the entire album a 1 on this website before the album even came out lmao

Quite frankly if this didn't have the name Linkin Park attatched to this it'd be an even harder 1. Just a terribly and lazily put together pop album made for the lowest common denominator. And the cliche lyrics that close the album leaves an extremely sour taste in the mouth
