Bjork hasn't been focused on writing songs since volta... she's been attempting to create a bigger experience - her last three albums require you to involve yourself completely with the listen which is something that the modern listener simply isn't into

didn't say anything about elite listening you tard. she's stated this exact thing many times in interviews, lol. her ideology in creating music albums has changed with biophilia forward

I really enjoy Biophilia & Vulincura but don't get this one so far, it's not engaging. I do TRY & listen but my mind starts to wander at times, can't help that if the music isn't drawing me in.

I involved and concentrated so much listening to this that I almost shit myself.

I'm suggesting your assertion that you must surrender yourself more than you would other music is a nonsense you double tard.

'Not sure about this one Bjork'

'You must listen closer to my new album to understand it, it resides on a different conceptual plane duntyerknow'

'You would say that love, ta'

Same here Dewinged, think I tried harder at one point because it wasn't happening... Bjork induced constipation.

why are you perpetually butthurt? no one is saying that you have to listen to it differently, or that someone is better 'cause they GET IT (I think this is her worst album and prefer song-oriented Bjork), just that Bjork hasn't been focused on writing songs as opposed to writing full album length experiences. there's nothing elite about it and its been an album philosophy since the late 60s

You're saying it requires the listener to approach the listening experience differently, to involve themselves, be somehow more attuned and attentive or some such guff - I don't like that as a philosophy, whether it's put forward by a director for a movie, a painting, whatever.

If it requires that then it'll earn that, surrendering yourself or whatnot should be as natural as breathing, that's the job of the artist - otherwise imo the album has a major problem from the off.

The minute I'm told to light a joss stick, clear my mind and meditate on an album I just get super suspicious sorry.

you're taking it way too seriously, lol. to say a track like the gate should theoretically require the same attention span as a song like it's oh so quiet or army of me is inane. there are clearly completely different goals in mind with the creation of those songs

I still think saying this approach is 'something that the modern listener simply isn't into' does whiff a tiny bit of elitism. Never have listeners had so much choice...and they don't all get tractor beamed towards the X Factor.

Still think the album is for the most an unpleasant mess but loads of people are enjoying this and the critical reception is ok too so fair enough.

I'll revisit it a couple of times but each time I've re-listened to the opener after my first couple of full album listens I've enjoyed it less.

you're right this album is tailor-made for the overconsumptive shuffle-playing modern music listener. I'm so elitist to think otherwise

Not having any good songs, good melodies or good singing is a slight weakness here agreed agreed

I think having listened to most of her discog last week just threw this one (and 'Volta' even more so) into focus as simply not playing to the artist's strengths, offering very little new in the way of melodies and pure 'ideas' (not 'sounds', she always finds new bits and pieces to wedge in there, new collaborators and the rest), and frequently just sounding repellent to my personal tastes.

I mean 'Vespertine' is still atmospheric, has a lot of depth, hardly a straightforward pop album - what honestly does something like this album do that really goes beyond that. As a listening experience? As entertainment? As art? She uses her voice so well on 'Vespertine', here it sounds abjectly atrocious in near every regard. Arca's elements are so hit and miss.

One of those freak contradictory albums where everything sounds far too similar (overall) and far too disjointed (at near enough any particular given moment) all at the same time.

Have you heard Medulla yet Doof? It's an interesting listen for sure, the only Bjork album that was actively grating at times.

This is ok, I just don't like the haphazard, unfocused approach & would prefer if it wasn't so unnecessarily busy, or so long for that matter.

'the only Bjork album that was actively grating at times'

A terrifying prospect when I'd describe half of the Bjork material I've already listened to in a similar way.

I'm clearly a much bigger fan of her work in general, this & Volta are 3s (so far) & Medulla is a 2. You should probably wary, haha. Good for your objectivity though...
