Pale Morning Star is easily one of the most gorgeous things they've ever done but overall this album definitely blends together maybe a bit too much. It's all very lovely and they still have some killer riff work but it is a little underambitious for having 3 guitarists imo.
Prolly a 3.5 for me which still kind of rules.

For me Neverlast, Pale Morning Star, The Offering, and Mute Is My Sorrow are the ones I love returning to. The rest I like but I don't feel the desire to return as much unless I'm doing a full album run. But I think those 4 tracks are perfect additions to the discography. Still a 4/5 overall because Insomnium is just really damn good.

I loved this album, every song is good to amazing. I agree with everyone on "Pale Morning Star" is the best song, but I also love "And Bells They Toll"

STDIACD sounds like a record that took a very long time to write and a lot of thought was put into the intricate details, structures, melodies, harmonies, really everything. Most of the newer stuff just comes across as more rehashed and uninspired than the former.
Yup. I've been listening to the older stuff lately cause it's been a while and that album hit me pretty hard.
I'm all over the place with the newer stuff. Some of it I really like, some of it is just ok. I kinda wish they would release a whole album similar to Weather the Storm.

I'm jamming it at the moment. I think it's their best since ATWW (not including Winter's Gate). I'm enjoying this more than I thought I would, there are some great tracks on here. Neverlast and the Offering have grown on me, even if they are paint by numbers Insomnium, they are hitting the spot as the seasons are starting to change

I'm a huge insomnium fan, they are my #1 band of all time. This album makes me think alot and wonder about Insomniums future. Looking at Wikipedia, if it is correct, Vanhalla has taken over as main songwriter for this Album. If you look at past songs they were mostly written by Ville Friman. There is no doubt that Insomniums "sound" has changed with different song writers. Vanhalla did write Pale morning star, but he also wrote The River, which is a very similar song. I know Friman is not touring for career reasons, but it looks like his contribution to song writing has also suffered as a result. Valediction the one song in the Album he wrote played it very safe, in my opinion he made ephemeral 2.0. The album sounds like safe melodeath with some odd choices in production.
This is Insomnium playing it safe with new band members and without Friman at the wheel, kind of taking what worked (The Killjoy - The Offering) and trying to make it new again but without the same inspiration. I wanted to go more in depth but those are my basic thoughts concerning this album.

I had sort of the same reaction when Vanhala first joined the band, and that initial release with him sounded like Omnium Insomnium. I am still not a big fan of that record, but I have liked the stuff after Shadows of the Dying Sun, so I guess I am used to the changes at this point. They are excellent live, also, so that helps.

Album has grown on me more than expected, especially Neverlast, The Offering, and Mute Is My Sorrow. Drums fall a bit short for me on most tracks.

I was expecting more, really loved Winter's Gate. Maybe it'll grow a bit, but I don't feel dragged into this one

Hot take - I think Ville Friman is going to leave this band at some point in the near future. He rarely plays live, and this is the first album ever for Insomnium where has so little to contribute to the music. He is credited for music on a whopping one track here. Compare that to One for Sorrow or Across the Dark where he was credited for music on literally EVERY track. Also, the addition of Jani adds fuel to this, as he can also sing. Why bring him in as a full-time member rather than simply a live addition? It's not like they are using all three guitars in any meaningful way on this record.

Isn't Jani still with Sonata Arctica however? I imagine for him balancing between two powerhouse bands within their scenes is difficult to juggle.
