They have been mixing them themselves so that's part of it.
I think they know not everyone likes it cuz they brought it up on a blog post.

I was 50/50 chalking it up to either the mix, or I might've gotten my hands on a shitty rip.

They might be mixing differently due to Armine, his voice may not be holding up as well like Bannon. They were great in concert but he was real buried in the mix.
It was similar when I saw Converge last year, Bannon sounded really strained and pretty buried. Concert was still amazing though.

Post metal vocals are supposed to be buried in the mix.

Well compare the production on the Translation Loss records to the newer stuff. The vocals are done completely different and I would say it's worse but I don't hate it or anything. They still make great albums.

It's all ambient low key stuff. No vocals or anything.

Armine has always been back in the mix though.

Not debating that but they just don't sound as good once they started self producing to me.

I assume they started self-producing after ADOM? I tend to agree, but I think the Anaesthete sounded pretty beast.

Yeah that sower of wind album is just ambient noise inspired by the four sections of utopioid... not reeeeally a new album.

Not bad for what it is at all. But certainly wouldn't let them off the hook for expecting new material because they released it.

It's a release just not a new full record, should have said EP I suppose.
You would be correct GuyMan, I assume they're still working on a sound they like when it comes to engineering but who knows they may be totally happy with how it is.

This has grown on me. Sure, the production is watery way past giving the album character and into just bleaching it out but still some cool jams.

Honestly, this is a hot take and all, but I really don't get the reverence for their first 3 albums. I like post-metal, I dig Isis, The Ocean, CoL, Intronaut, Dirge but I do not get those Rosetta albums. The first two are barely listenable.
