Don't think its generally that well-regarded but by far my favourite here is 40 Days

Thats the archetypal shoegaze song/sound for me

40 Days is my favorite here too, the guitars are so beautifully expressive and sad

This is growing on me, think I’ll take Source up on that offer and start from the beginning. It appears Just For A Day’s re-release includes the early EP material.

s/t is a must-check

just for a day is like all the worst parts of their early sound on one album but it's still ok

Yeah I don't really dig Just For A Day either. Felt I was the only one Johnny, turns out you're never the only one at something.

S/t is lovely but not on par with this for me either. Still a 4.0!

s/t EP sorry, not the album (which is obvs not on par with this)

the nice thing about Slowdive is that they mix shoegaze with just enough non-boring dream pop or ambient styles that they don't flop in the classic Way of the Shoegaze band (apart from the EP, which aces pure gaze...and Just For A Day, which flops at it)

is being able to remember the minutiae necessary for music to be good?

I don't think so, especially not on a first listen. My initial take-away from an album is always the vibe or sound or anything interesting or catchy about it that immediately hooks me.

But if none of the minutiae is memorable after multiple listens then the album's probably boring.

I don't think so, I love a lot of the same stuff as you lol. I guess it depends on the style, some music depends loads on vibe or atmosphere. Maybe minutiae isn't the right word, but I think it's often the little things in music that give artists/albums any distinctive character, especially with bands that like to stick to one style or genre.
