> Maybe minutiae isn't the right word, but I think it's often the little things in music that give artists/albums any distinctive character

ye by minutiae i meant "being able to remember notes" and stuff. i can barely remember anything from a good chunk of my 4s and 4.5s , but when i listen to em i remember why they fucking rule hard

^^^

Strong points here. Many times a rating of an album works like kinda reminding yourself what you feel about it.

"is being able to remember the minutiae necessary for music to be good?"

Yeah I often remember the finer details as I’m listening, but unless I’m in the moment these details are usually lost. Recollecting the general vibe is a feeling that’s almost always attainable, unless you checked something once and it was a hazy distant ‘false memory‘ you’ve since forgotten.

I don't remember notes per se, but I do usually remember a cool melody, or a riff, or a sick drum fill, maybe a particular vocal inflection or a line, etc. There's usually something in particular that I want to hear whenever I return to an album, and an album that I truly love will have a few of these per song.

I just realised that I'm probably talking about hooks there. It's the little things that make particular hooks catchy, though, so the same vocal line being sung by somebody else probably won't land the same way. It's those little things that I understood by the word "minutiae," I guess.

s/t EP smells like a surefire winner, I dig Morningrise too. Just For A Day/3rd EP have a little work to do. Although I don’t flat-out dislike anything so far.

Never understood the appeal of Loveless either - well beyond some thoughts of ‘this is vaguely pleasant’... guess I should revisit that one as well.

MBV feels more gaze/noise to me, Slowdive a bit more dream/pop, and personally I just prefer the latter a bit which is why I favor them over MBV.

I also think Slowdive is more accessible up front, and MBV is, comparatively, a "grower" band. Every time I revisit 'Loveless', I like it better than I did the previous time. Although I still think their best work is 'You Made Me Realise' (and 'mbv' gets way waaaay too much hate, too).

have you actually listened to it or are you just basing it off of other people's ratings?
