I one time went to sleep with this on and them Covenant afterwards, and I had the most fucked up dream about some horror house that made me have sex with my friend so we could survive this torture chamber. Ya.

I really would wish for this stuff in a better sound quality. Even after all these years, in good quality this album could blow a lot of stuff in the ambient house/techno scene out of the water.

Overrated album.

Good? Definitely.

Up there with the best ambient albums ever? Not really.

It is a little overrated, But it's pretty much the most solid Electronica album ever. None of the songs are too long for me, and it's the perfect balance between Rave and IDM.

I'm very stuck between 4-4.5 on this, but Pulsewidth, Schottkey 7th Path, and Ptolemy are just amazing!!!!

What do you mean most solid?

If you mean best, then hell no.

If you mean consistent, well it stays on a consistent path, but I've seen many electronic albums do likewise.

There are some really nice sounds on the album, I'll give him that, but for the most part he doesn't use them as well as he could have. As a stepping stone into the world of electronic music, Aphex Twin is great. But there is better stuff out there.

I loved this album. I listened to it while reading the Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon and for some reason, they seemed to work together really well and I've associated one with the other ever since.

I agree with this review generally, except for one thing;

"It shows no influences or sounds like anything that came before it."

Check out Man Machine, by Kraftwerk. They were the true pioneers of electronic music. Of course, this album took it a step further, but Kraftwerk is where it all started.

I FINALLY got this album. The album as a whole probably wasn't as good as I expected but Xtal may be the greatest song ever recorded. Yeah I'm just gonna throw that out there.

It's well worth throwing out there... now get "Volume 2" if you don't have it already ;)

Yeah from what I've heard Vol. 2 is even better than 85-92. It seems there's two groups of aphex twin fans. Those who like the simpler ambience and those who like all the frantic noise. A lot of ppl prefer something like "come to daddy" over his early stuff. I just don't get it. I guess that's why I was a bit dissapointed with squarepusher.

I love "Come to Daddy" but I'll take the simple ambience over the abundance of noise found on albums like "I Care Because You Do".
