Agalloch seem to get better with songwriting and production with every release. One of the best from 2006.

No problem rattlehead. I agree that Agalloch get better with each release, the exception being "Pale Folklore", that is their best album by far. This is a close second though.

Second best album by these guys. The Mantle was a snoozefest in some areas.

For the majority of the album, everything is top quality. It's just the last track that I don't care for much.
Great review, can see you're passionate about Agalloch.

thanks, I found Pale Folklore to be a bit boring compared to this. I need to give it another listen.

Wizard I completely agree with you, "The Mantle" was dead boring during some points. Even so, this is one of my favorite bands.

Eh, it gets worse after a while. Their older stuff is better, and I really only listen to Limbs, Falling Snow, and Fire Above nowadays. But it's still really good.

Agalloch is not an important band, for metal or otherwise.

Good review, this is my 2nd favorite by them, Pale Folklore just doesn't match up for the most part. And why do you all think The Mantle is boring? Just because it has a lot of instrumental songs doesn't mean it's boring. :P

It's boring because it really goes nowhere.

The Mantle was boring because alot of the songs sounded similar. The acoustic guitar was the most monotonous part of that album. I won't complain further past that though, it was still descent.

I'm thinking i'm going to need to listen to this...

I really like Agalloch, and I've listened to both Pale Folklore and The Mantle, and this looks just as good as both of them. HOWEVER, I do believe that Agalloch aren't as good as some people think they are. Sorry to crash the parade.

I remember when this first came out, several people (not here, I wasn't a member yet) said that it would age poorly. And usually people are right about that, because most albums I've ever liked end up falling somewhere in the 2.5-3.5 range after a few years. This is one of the only albums I've heard in my life thus far that has stood the test of time. I tried to force myself to see The Mantle or Pale Folklore as superior albums per recommendation, but it just never happened. This album is one of the greatest contributions to metal and music as a whole in recent time, and it's one of the reasons I have such a hard time rating anything else 5/5. This album creates landscapes of sound that are tangible, visceral, and stir up a sense of distance, vastness, and yearning. If you feel it, you get it. If you don't, it's probably nothing more than a decent album. I owned it for 2 months and never really got into it at all, and in fact skipped through tracks. One day it just clicked, and I've been awed since.
