Soo buying this when it comes out.

Need to listen through a few more times to rate, but so far I'm between a 3.5-4.

Not as good as Vheissu or TAITA but I prefer it to the Alchemy Index...

I think the trouble with this is that because it's Thrice, people have sometimes "unrealistic" expectations of their albums...I reckon if that was another unknown band, that the ratings might be higher.

I personally think the things you've mentioned as being 'lifted' or 'rehashed' range from endearing and well worked (in the case of the earth shaking / bars) to unimportant. I seriously don't see how In Exile would remind anybody of Viva La Vida unless they were looking for comparisons. It's essentially just a wordless chant - hardly something Coldplay or any musician has a monopoly on. I also disagree this doesn't hit new heights; I think it's their best crafted release to date.

Great review, though, we just disagree on a fair number of things. And Kensrue on Beggars (and in general) is stellar.

...I dunno about you guys, I liked Doublespeak. It reminded me of Cold War Kids material.

Amazing review, it hits things I noticed and those minor details I managed to look past.

Doublespeak is one of the very few Thrice songs that I can say I don't like.

All of the comments and reviews really tell the story of how i thought this album would be interpreted upon first hearing it. For some, including myself, my mind was pretty much blown; yet for a large portion of the population this is merely just a "good" record. I guess time will tell which way the opinion will sway in the future.

As for the album itself, I was not expecting the sound that came out of my speakers. With every Thrice album i expect a certain type of song and feel. This album, even morose, (for myself at least), blew me away with sounds I had never heard in a thrice album. The entire work is drenched in a much more bluesy-feel which is something that I am really enjoying. I also am greatly enjoying some of the more post-rock moments on the album. Yet, what I find most astounding with this album is how ever song, one after the other, puts me in a completely different mood, and sets a completely different tone. Yes, this could be said for each album of the Alchemy Index, but on each of the for disks the feel was generally the same.

In short, I feel that this is Thrice's most mature and enjoyable album to date. Is it their "best"? Probably not. This album didn't really cover much new ground when in the context of all of music as a whole, yet the way Thrice uses these familiar sounds is absolutely genius.

I didn't think that the end of In Exile sounded like the part of Vida La Vida at all. They are similar, but distinctly different sounding if you listen to it. Unless you were just going for a comparison to it, instead of actually meaning that its a guest appearance.

This album will more than likely grow on me. I just wish for the harder hitting stuff. Even on "Vheissu" they had slower songs but they still had that "edge" to them. "Stand and Feel Your Worth" and "Broken Lungs" comes to mind. To me, "For Miles" is the quintessential Thrice song. It's everything they have tried to do with their albums. I would classify that as one of my all time favorite songs period. And the end is just epic.

And I agree with Thor. There is just something about "Doublespeak" that I don't like. I won't skip it, but it's just missing that something.

So far, "All the World is Mad", "Circles" and "Beggars" are my favorites.

Haha I knew it. The average rating for this goes from 4.24 to 4 overnight because of a slightly negative review. Think for yourself peoples!

Broken Lungs wasn't on Vheissu.

My favorites atm are probably The Weight, Circles, and Talking Through Glass.

Everyone on this site is literally OBSESSED with Thrice. I've never listened to 'em. Suppose I should give them a chance. They don't really seem like my cup of tea, though.

When I started listening to Thrice 2 years ago they werent my cup of tea either, but they helped me start branching away from m3t4l and are one of my favorite bands ever now.

Lol well, I'm not worried about having to branch away from metal. Metal is only my most recent love. I liked pretty much anything and everything else first. But, still, I need to check 'em out.

Thrice mostly offsets the considerable weight of these moments by being pretty much the best fucking band in the world.
