no way dude, most post-rock bands follow the "soft-buildup-climax" formula with one theme being repeated/varied upon slightly as the song goes on. mono is such a band, It's just that they're so goddamn good at it which makes it ok. Do Make Say Think don't really have "climaxes" per se, preferring to add layers and ideas rather than increase the volume (sound wise and instrument wise)

holy fuck really good review. I haven't checked these guys out yet. I was very close to getting History in Rust, but i didn't cause
im stoopid.
|
| |
these guys>mono
like seriously just listen to "Do"
|
| |
which.album.to.start.with.
|
| |
umm
depends. i dunno if anyone agrees with me but this is pretty accessible, mainly because of "Do" and also if you're used to post-rock song lengths.
Otherwise I'd get Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn or You, You're a History in Rust

i'll get all three tomorrow

Yea Soby, I've got in mind guys like Sigur Ros and Explosions In The Sky (there's a reference to them i the review if you look real carefully too!) who're definitely what most people think of when they hear post rock, along side Mono.
And thanks for the kind words everyone.

First listen is putting this as a 4 or 4.5 but things are likely to change. I wasn't as blown away from this as I was from my first listen of Hymn To The Immortal Wind though.
Also is Downer gonna review this too, or did your review replace his?

Nah, Downer asked me to do it, so I did. Half makes up for the fact that I keep getting lazy and not reviewing albums I say I will.
Also, I really don't get why people are so blown away by bands like Mono - sure, it's great, but it's all so predictable. Having already heard You Are There, Hymn sounded exactly like I thought it would, which is to say, really, really similar. Bands like them (SR, ETIS) seem more content to produce endless variations on a theme (a good theme) rather than pushing boundaries, compared to these guys, or even GY!BE. Also, if GYBE put out an album tomorrow, they'd totally stomp all over DMST.

amen brother (even though i haven't heard DMST)
|

Ahh OK fair enough, I was interested to see what he thought is all.
I understand what you're saying, but at the same time I think that Hymn was so remarkable in just how consistent it was. Sure the theme was pretty much the same as on YAT but the execution and structure to the album was improved exponentially. As for Sigur Ros I thought their new album was a step (albeit small) away from "The Sigur Ros Formula" and as a result they put out their best record since Agaetus.
Thats all just my opinion though, and this is still an excellent album.

Yea, agreed about the new Sigur Ros, it's fresh.

ugh, I've been waiting to purchase this because I will not download Do Make's stuff, only buy. They are the best post-rock band going right now. Mono is predictable, good at what they do yes, but they don't hold a candle to these guys frankly. This review is ridiculous, in an awesome way.

thanks dude. I started writing my review last week and realized I was regurgitating every point you made in your soundoff and when I was late due to personal reasons, I figured you should be the man to do this review.
if Mono stands for everything ‘traditional’ post rock strives for, DMST stand visibly and sonically opposed in every single conceivable way, preferring experimentation over structure, and open, wandering space over overbearing moodiness.
See I was going to say this exact thing. Well done Silveri, cheers.
