The first problem is that the songs don't work. Lots of chug riffing, lots of tremolo-ism, lots of things that sound like Slayer, just none of them stick. It's like they released it on autopilot, because they needed a new album;
I have been waiting for a while to hear a reviewer say this. Thank you.
The other issue is the production, which is really weird and lends it a feel that is close to that of Death Magnetic.
That's why this album sucks so much. Blame it on the producer.
Great review and the best one for this album so far.

When I listen to a Slayer album I want to hear mindless solos, screaming, drums and guitars going a hundred miles an hour, I don't want to hear any experimental shit, I want to hear Slayer and I'm enjoying this album for that simple fact, Slayer are reliable, you know what you are getting.

Me too, actually. I'm just getting the D-sides of Reign in Blood. That doesn't make me really happy. The problem isn't no experimentation, the problem is they suck at what they do at this point in time and that they can do better.

I do think the production could have been more solid, but for the most part, I do like most of the songs on this record. I mean, "Americon" is a turd of a song; however, I really like "World Painted Blood," Beauty Through Order," and "Public Display of Dismemberment."
