the usual way to say the music is bad is to say it's not actually progressive.

I could record the sound of my guitar being flung off a roof and then put it in a bizarre time signature... that's progressive.... does it mean its good? No.

Not Progressive =/= Bad

Progressive =/= Good

progressive is a label, not a genre. people throw it on to sound smart, but really, "progress" is such a vague and easily defined word that anything that isn't regression can be considered progress.

if you consider 'progressive' metal music where the songs are very long, usually concept based, and have meandering sounds that usually return to a main riff/verse, then yeah, orphaned land are progressive.

if you mean a band that is breaking down boundaries and pushing music into new territory, then no, they are not. they are just one of many gimmicky bands that ended up relying too much on its own unique flourish

tsk......

if the album is just as bad as the review says it is, then its the worst possible start for 2010. Oh well, at least i know Dark Tranquillity won't fuck it up come Feb....

It's not progressive because it doesn't progress anything. It's relatively straight forward metal, honestly closer to System of a Down than, say, Dream Theater, and that's taking progressive as a genre, which it isn't. Progression is a word which does not apply to this album, as like I said, it progresses nothing.

Three years after your review, would you still consider Mabool a 5?

I still consider Mabool a 5 after 2 years, not sure about Tyler. Mabool was a truly fantastic album. I find it funny that those guys on the forum didn't take the time to see what Tyler thought about Mabool. Then how exactly would they explain 90% of their disparaging comments? lol

I'm just trying to figure out if this album is actually that big of a letdown from Mabool or if his tastes just changed about OL.

I'm supposed to be getting one but I haven't really heard from them. Good reminder, though.

And no, Mabool hasn't really held up as a five for me, but I still hold real weight towards it for it's initial impact and relevance. What that means, well, you decide.

Finally, someone has it figured out.

Coke, this is off-topic, but I was wondering if you had a promo or will be getting a promo for the new In Mourning album being released at the end of the month. I'm really hoping to be impressed with it.

a) Mabool was pretty damn corny

b) Steve Wilson may be an arrogant ass, and PT may be pretty mediocre nowadays, but he made some GREAT music in the past, and his production work has always been great. Just listen to the Opeth albums he produced FFS. He really is an excellent producer - give him credit where credit is due (as a producer), and slam him where it is deserved (attitude, lyrics, recent PT). This album didn't suck because of Steve Wilson, it sucked because this band is awful. I haven't listened to this record and I won't, but every negative you pointed out can be applied to Mabool.

Personally I think the SW criticism is all a bit harsh and detracts from the quality of the review. I'll be interested to hear this though, I expect you're pretty much 100% right about it.

Not really considering he had something to do with the quality of this album.

You guys are making it sound like I directed entire paragraphs to him. I mentioned him, almost in passing, to reference the album's lack of direction.

"I've always liked the concept behind Mabool, but have never understood the godly status it picked up here." - At least it isn't Traced In Air, haha. Besides the concept, the music on Mabool is just top notch. It has a killer flow to it that I rarely hear, hence why I gave it a 5.

I said it once and ill say it again: this band wasnt that good before SW produced this album so i doubt its made that much of a signficant difference.
