For the record, it isn't Rubin's fault that it's overly compressed, it's Vlado's fault. It's a trick that is used in the mastering process, something Rick doesn't do to this album.

Why Rubin continues to hire Meller every single time is baffling though. They say that he gets a few different people to master the record each time and then does a 'blind' listening test and invariably chooses Meller's version, which means something is very wrong with his ears. It's amazing that the band didn't speak up either though, especially when Frusciante was around. Surely the terrible feedback must have gotten back to them too.
Have you heard the vinyl version of Stadium Arcadium versus the CD one? It was mastered by a different guy and sounds a thousand times better.

@ckunke002 - I read it somewhere but can't remember where, it was quite a while ago. But yeah it's a damn shame that all their stuff from this album onwards has such terrible sound quality because the songs are great.
re: Stadium vinyl - I don't own it either but there's a .flac rip floating around on the internet, worth checking if you dig the album.
