Vid is slammin. I thought it was hilarious. There's this sexophobe/homophobe guy I know and I sent him the link to it, and he freaked out, it was hilarious.

i don't even want to rate this cuz of the backlash i'd be sure to receive. i just don't get it, i guess.

sounds like sloppy nonsense. i'll admit there are strong melodies but the vocals are just lazy and drugged out.

not deserving of top album of 2009 honors imo.

haha. thanks for the laugh Enotron.

i don't think i'm any more relevant than anyone else on this site, i've simply seen that opinions get crushed around here instead

of discussed. so in an effort to start discussion, someone tell me what i'm missing here. convince me if you can.

here's my opinion of the album. http://blogcritics.org/music/article/one-mans-opinion-girls-album/

If you've ever read Non-Synchronity's review of Merriweather Post Pavillion, 31 out of 32 said it was well written(it was a negative review and MPP is one of the biggest sputnik hyped albums).

Your review was alright, but simply stating that the musicianship is "short of terrible" doesn't really prove anything or say something about the music(actually, besides your criticisms of the vocals, you said nothing about the music).

The problem I have, is that you go on an inactive thread and declare that you wouldn't even rate this due to the "backlash you'd be sure to receive". Nobody would notice or care if you gave it a low rating and that statement within itself make it out as if you think your actions are important to everyone else(you're pretty much putting everybody down as defensive hipsters). It's just as bullshit as the amusement you attempt to display in response to my question.

i read your blog thing, justus, and while your point about back stories is a valid one i think you're missing an important aspect. i don't think this album needs the back story as much as it tells the story and that's the point a lot of people are getting at with the mention of it. songs like "lust for life" and "hellhole ratrace" are confused and tragic and convey his entire life in a couple minutes. "lust for life" is just a simple surf pop song and yet with lyrics like "i wish i had a father, maybe then i would've turned out right" its just so much more, the sound is so unimportant but everything else about it is just soul encompassing. its little things like that, little contradictions or simple lyrics, that really hit me about this.

you also mention that the sloppy musicianship and off tune vocals hurt it for you, while admitting that this isn't really your thing to begin with, so it's not surprising that you don't like this as it's almost notoriously divisive amongst listeners, particularly those without a previous affinity to the lo-fi/surf pop trend. each to his own though, i don't see why you should be hesitant to rate it, everyones entitled to an opinion.

Not to mention that it's actually brilliantly produced. I don't see how this is lo-fi in the slightest. From the really layered production in lust for life and hellhole racetrace, to the sparse guitars and percussion in Lauren Marie, I think the production is the best part of the record. I wouldn't lump it with the rest of the lo-fi/surf rock scene.

i actually completely agree about the production, although for convenience sake it's a much easier label to put to it. call me lazy. labels/genre aren't a big deal anyway.

Certainly. I mean it's definitely in the vein of surf/indie pop, but a lot of those bands seem to put a minimal amount of effort into perfecting the production, almost creating a lovable contradiction by playing pop music raw and unpolished. To me, that's where Girls sort of differs, especially if you read about JR and his whole role when it came to producing the album.

the "sloppy nonsense" to me communicates emotion. the opposite of something like Grizzly Bear, which to me is "sloppy intellectualism".

great notes Enotron and Kirgasm, especially the one about Album telling the backstory. that might be an important distinction.

one question though if i can beat a dead horse on an "inactive thread" pertains to the vocal style. do fans of this album enjoy the way he sings or is it something you live with in the sense that the sum of the whole is greater than the parts?

I adore the singing. It's not really accessible, but it certainly fits the passion of the music. And c'mon dude, there was no commenting on this thread for two months before your first comment. It wasn't unwarranted to call the thread inactive.
