Can't believe you've never heard anything by these guys yet Spirit, but this isn't the place to begin. As others have said, start with Autumn Aurora or Blood In Our Wells.

What's the production like?

I've only bothered hearing Autumn Aurora from these guys so far, back when I was going through my Ulver stage and looking for similar black metal. It was pretty damn good, but it could get really boring really fast if you were in the wrong mood. I don't know whether to check this out; the post-rock influences sound appealing, but if they haven't done it right I'll be disappointed.

bastard, you beat me to it. I was planning on reviewing this for awhile. You did a better job than I was going to though so its okay

the forty-minute run of the album, and upon first listen it’s clear that this is true. The riffs have the tendency to wallow around far longer than they should, and the relatively simplistic drumming adds to the plodding boredom that is only broken by the occasional rolling fill or atmospheric guitar solo.
Second and third listens sound better and I think this should be acknowledged.
and assuming the intention was to create a hypnotizing atmosphere that combines repeated simple melodies with a strong atmosphere, everything still adds up to an album that could be summed up in one or two songs, not six.
I agree and disagree with this. It's that hypnotic albums are supposed to have repeating riffs. In this, I think it's unfair to say you can sum up an album in two songs. The point is that they don't need a million riffs to get their point across.
but the lost potential is something that simply cannot be ignored.
This I agree with, especially the first song 'Downfall of the Epoch' which is not a great way to open up an album at all. The rest of the album is great though.
Great review otherwise!

It's never changed for me, even a dozen listens through. Hard for me to acknowledge something I don't find true without sounding like:
"Well, it MAY be different for you after many repeated listens, I mean this is after all YOUR musical preference, but in my humble opinion this shit stays boring. But you might not think so. In fact, fuck this whole review because you might think differently."
See what I'm saying? I still cleared it up, though.

Well, I agreed with you when you wrote your soundoff, and I agree with this review. Pretty much hit all the points I would say. Nicely done once again.
Checked out that Nagelfar album yet?
