It's a non-american's version of an NYC record in the best way possible

Saw him on the Ken tour and he did Bay of Pigs as the encore, made me cry.

Also The Blue Nile’s “Hats.” More understated but like the climax of “Downtown Lights” absolutely taps into the sublime urban psychosis of Kaputt

thanks. I like Prefab Sprout but it has that sorta tryhard 80s pop energy, I fuck with the more laid back approach here

Also just wanted to say, ratings really are meaningless. I’ve considered this album a personal top 10 for years and for whatever reason that’s made me less inclined to formally change this old rating. We all have ears, ya know

Colton I’d say stay away from any of Bejar’s pre ‘10s albums, just don’t terribly seem your thing. For ones release after this, honestly the one form this year is my fave and I guess kind of the closest to this. Poison Season and Have We Met are also with your time though I’m not a fan of Ken.

FWIW I don’t think any of the later Destroyer albums are trying to what this does; as with all things, they’re best taken on their own terms.

it’s almost like I actually mainly use this site for music discussion and discovery and to say otherwise is a salty mischaracterization

the arrangements are mostly pretty nice yeah, pretty inspiring to me how he’s able to do so much with so little (often just two maj/min7 chords played very simply, 80s drum rhythm, simple bass and synth pads). the horns add a lot. I don’t really like the arrangements on Bay Of Pigs, feels like he just slapped random nexus presets on for those big goofy arpeggios. I think the majority of the lyrics are kinda bad tbh and don’t really mesh with the sound of the album. some great songs though (title track especially)

There are some people in my life who enjoyed this album only in its acclaim on Pitchfork and who enjoy drugs and thrift stores and go to art school because they fit just right into the subculture they're trying to fulfill. In reality, they have the saddest oceanic eyes and frown when no one's looking and don't know how to take the film out of their Holga cameras. Kaputt encompasses the intense melancholy of fitting in and fitting out, the soggy melodies of their lives. We envision ourselves both surrounded by fame and wealth and love, yet also within the context of supreme self-doubt and fear of the world and in social exclusion - and the video for Kaputt absolutely encompasses both relationships. There is a strange vacancy about these people, victims of the merge of social activism and consumerism and technology, and they frighten and disgust and irritate and sadden me all at once, and I sometimes antagonize my own actions simply to avoid associating with their ideas.

I had a dream a few months ago about digging through dry winter grass trying to find a piece of grass-rolled gum to chew, swimming with sting rays above this same dead sod blanketed field, which took the place of kelp and anemone. Pink-hued glasses perch on the nose.

in a less egregious RYM review someone says Song For America sounds like Bowie's Station To Station, true?

Colton this will sound like a confrontational question but does THIS sound 80s to you?
